1st Watchmen review! Aug. 15, 2008
Source: MySpace
by: Mike Sampson

Well sorta... We here at JoBlo.com haven't seen the entire WATCHMEN film yet (though we're free at a moment's notice Mr. Snyder...) but someone out there has. And that someone is Kevin Smith. Smith shared the Comic-Con stage during the Entertainment Weekly "Visionaries" panel (along with Judd Apatow and Frank Miller) and shortly thereafter Snyder invited Smith to screen a rough cut of the film. While Smith is sadly hamstrung by a non-disclosure agreement, he did post some thoughts on his MySpace blog:

And just so it's not all about me and my shit... I saw "Watchmen." It's f*cking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching "Sin City" on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you'll come close to watching "Watchmen." Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can't come soon enough.

"F*cking astounding"? Now that's what I want to hear. And even more astounding is that Smith likely didn't even see all the finished effects. I wonder if Alan Moore would actually eat his words if he decided to watch it and actually like it. Thanks to "Silent Jay" for the heads up!

BELIEVABLE HYPE
This info from Smith holds a lot of weight, considering he's a huge comic book nerd and fanboy. I don't think he'd lie about this as it could potentially alienate some of his fans. The build up to this movie is looking good so far, I just hope it can live up to the huge amount of expectation it's gonne have laid on it.

KEVIN SMITH IS PROBABLY RIGHT
i read the comic and watched the trailer again, the scenes are almost exactly right off the page down to the clothes and smallest details, i can find the exact panels that the trailer is from
this movie is going to be awesome and completely truthfull so im extremely excited for this, im just not sure about how they are gonna fit everything in under 3 hours and i hear that snyder is going to be forced to cut 20 minutes off the film

I HOPE HE EATS HIS WORDS
I love Alan Moore's writing, but I really think the guy comes across as a pretentious asshole (and that is based on having met him, not just hearsay). I think summarily dismissing a film that you haven't even seen is dumb. Granted, a few of the adaptations of his work have been a bit off (LXG), he is overly critical of things that worked well, such as From Hell or V for Vendetta. Sure, they weren't spot on translations, but one can still appreciate that they kept the general feel and message intact while expanding to something new and original that wasn't just a carbon copy of the source material. While I did love Sin City with a passion, you've gotta admit that if you've ready the books, there's really no surprises there. I, for one, like to be thrown a curve ball once in a while.

HOPE KEVIN SMITH IS RIGHT
Sin City is my favorite comic book movie of all time. Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen were excellent in that movie.

Regardless of whether you liked the movie or not, it was extremely faithful to its source material, and because of that, it knocked down doors, and paved the way for other comic book movies to take the same route and be faithful to their source materials too.

Anybody here like 300? That movie would not exist without Sin City, because Zach Snyder and hollywood studios were so heavily influenced by Sin City. However, I did not like 300 because of the incredibly stupid subplot involving the queen that Zach Snyder added which wasn't in the book (Lena Headey's performance was great though). But, in the other areas he did a pretty good job translating the book to film.

Now, if what Kevin Smith is saying is true, Watchmen will be a COMPLETELY accurate and faithful adaptation of the graphic novel, which I really hope it is. It sounds like a major step up from this director's last attempt to bring a graphic novel to the big screen, 300.

Now, "triple Sin City" is going overboard, because Sin City was 99% accurate to the books, so for Watchmen to be triple that is impossible, but I do appreciate his enthusiasm on the matter and I get what he's saying.

So, Kevin Smith's comments definitely raised my expectations for this movie. As someone who loved the Watchmen graphic novel, I had my doubts, but now, I think it's probably going to turn out well. Also, I've been a fan of the cast from the very beginning. I've seen all these actors before and liked them in their other movies and think they will fit their roles perfectly.

This is great news, it eases my mind somewhat because I was worried Snyder was gonna change a lot. Here's hoping Smith's review is dead on.

that Kevin Smith also thought Episode 3 was "f*cking astounding" as well. And we all know how well that Shite sandwich tasted.

Sorry folks but I just thought that Sin City wasn't the shit like most of you. That's all! Did enjoy seeing Carla Gugino half naked and stuff, but that's about it.
