Strike Back below!
by: Omar Aviles May. 14, 2008

Most of us have seen or at least heard of the cameo Sam Jackson makes in IRON MAN as Nick Fury recruiting Tony Stark for the "Avenger Initiative" but did any of you also happen to notice that when Stark is taking his suit off after his dogfight with the F-22's, off to the left on his workbench, can be seen what appears to be some sort of prototype of Captain America's shield? The folks at io9 were astute enough to catch this little nugget and you can click through for a bigger version of the below pic to ascertain whether or not this is really the shield. What do you guys think?

IRON MAN

Source: io9

Extra Tidbit: Within the comics, the title "Captain America" applies to whomever is chosen by the U.S. government to wear the costume and bear the shield, though that post has been occupied by Steve Rogers for pretty much all of the comic's history.

Stop reaching
We need to stop reaching for anyhing and everything in these movies. Here is an idea it was part of the suit chest plate and the light from above made it look a little like a star. Let not over analize this movie and simple enjoy it.

not gonna say yes or no but
it could be i mean he is after all against weapons of mass destruction now so why wouldnt he of started making some lets say other "toy's" perhaps terrence howard is the new cap'n as sam is the new fury.

T.H. as Cap America rocks because i can see it but something about the nick fury those just dont fit but then again i didnt see him in "action".

wtf....
I think mentioning Sam Jack as Nick Fury would have been enough as that was around before the films release but hope that you didn't just describe/ruin/give away the scene following the credits. I'm yet to see the film and with a newborn it's harder to get out to see the films on release.

Giving away scenes like that is poor :s

I don't see how deadshot can make such a definite opinion on this pic. The answer can't be a definite "NO".

However, I gotta say, I don't see a star on a shield. Nor does it flow with the story. We're stretching, and I have a feeling Marvel's gonna use it to their own advantage.

This is...
...a HUGE leap for anyone to make. I really don't think that Tony Stark would have even thought of a shield like that until well after he's approached by Fury. So, to the believers... the answer is NO!

It's still NO! despite what geektyrant.com has to say about it. If that confirmation came from one of the Arads or Favreau, I'd believe it. Since it's an "insider", the answer is ...

It's a possibility that they used the same scene, but with different dailies. But that's definitely NOT Captain America's shield. I have a ManPerson with an 8,000 book collection who is absolutely defiantly telling me that it's not. ("It almost looks like Captain Marvel or Star Brand Star Symbol, but NOT Captain America.")

cool but.....
the quality is so bad on those pictures, I'd have to go see the movie again and keep an eye out for that.

but either way, in the movie world would Stark even know the Captain yet??? probably not since the Avengers arent together yet.

Related
I think that all the movies are going to be related that involve The Avengers. I have a feeling that after the credits of The Incredible Hulk, Nick Fury will be there to recruit Banner.

Seems like...
It was confirmed....

"Insider at Marvel confirms.. It is Captain Americas Shield!! Tony Starks father created weapons during World War II. He was the one that created the shield! Which is why Tony had it in the first place. Why did Tony Stark have it our on his work table? As a reference for the suit he was building of course. get out of here
if it is Captain America's shield (and I'm not convinced it is), I think the Favs would have made it a wee bit more obvious so that a few more than the three or four people that've "discovered" this would have noticed. I'm just saying.

It looks like some sort of reflection to me. Who knows, though?

I don't think that's a shield. Where is the bottom of the star and why does the star rise off the shield like it's topographic? I see blue, light blue, and white, no red.

personally
Personally, I think he's building C-3PO.
Wait a minute, does that make him Darth Vader? Now I've gone cross eyed. Honestly, I highly doubt that's the Captain America shield. I understand that they are connecting everything in the universe (which is cool), but it seems to be a bit of a stretch (for all the below reasons).

I Am pretty sure it is!
I came across this the other day here, [link] they say they got confirmation from an insider. who knows. Marvel is making an effort to connect the Marvel world together through its films.

Sounds like a little of a stretch to me... Going to all the trouble of designing a shield and burry in the back like that? That lab was so full of stuff, it could be anything!!

Anyway if Downey hadn't been Stark it wouldn't have been half the film it is.

I remember this scene...different outlets were showing this scene as a preview before the movie came out - someone should be able to find this scene pretty quick.
