Dempsey feels heisty Nov. 4, 2009

Patrick Dempsey has signed on to star in an upcoming untitled heist comedy from Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the writers of THE HANGOVER. Dempsey, who has been reevaluating life since MADE OF HONOR, will star as a bank manager who gets caught in the middle of two simultaneous yet different robberies while trying to keep a bank teller he's crushing on safe. Paul McGuigan, who last directed this year's PUSH, will direct the film, which seems like an odd choice for a movie that seems to be angling itself as "a comedy from the writers of THE HANGOVER."

The good news for Dempsey is that he's producing the film as well as starring in it so it'll hopefully give him some creative control and avoid him being plagued as "the boyfriend" in the female-driven romantic comedies (as he'll be doing in the upcoming rom-com VALENTINE'S DAY). Filming on the untitled project is expected to begin in April.

Extra Tidbit: Was just watching Dempsey star as Jimbo in OUTBREAK this very weekend...

I always liked Dempsey. I remember his 80's films like Can't Buy Me Love and Loverboy. It's funny how one big role can turn your career around. I think for him it was Grey's Anatomy.

I like Dempsey from back when he was mostly known as a guest star in network TV on some above-average shows (pre-McDreamy). I like Paul McGuigan, but mostly for "Gangster No. 1," and the opening sequence of "Lucky Number Slevin" (the rest of that movie just was too clever).

Since Dempsey isn't known of late as a serious actor, and McGuigan is nothing if not stylish, it oughta make for an interesting combination with the writing team from the top-ranking R-rated comedy in box office history. If there hadn't been some pretty bad comedy heist comedies to come along, I'd be more pumped. And really, how excited can we get when a movie hasn't even started filming yet?
