A tame Terminator? May. 5, 2008

Source: Variety

Having a PG-13 DIE HARD movie was bad enough and now it looks like we'll have to sit through a PG-13 TERMINATOR. Production company Halcyon confirmed to Variety that they aim to deliver a PG-13 movie to Warner Bros. and by "aim to deliver" they mean that "Warner Bros. told us to make a PG-13 movie otherwise they wouldn't touch it with a 10-ft. pole." In fact Halcyon head Derek Anderson says he never even discussed the possibility of a R-rated TERMINATOR with Warner Bros. Halcyon believes that they can "broaden" the film's audience without compromising the film's "gritty vision." But really, are teenagers the target audience for a TERMINATOR movie? In the end though it's all about money and things like a mass-market toy deal with Plamates Toys (finally you can have your Christian Bale Batman fight your Christian Bale John Connor!). In addition to Bale, the film stars Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood and Anton Yelchin. Filming on TERMINATOR SALVATION begins today in Los Angeles.

Extra Tidbit: Sadly that Terminator doggystyle scene will have to be cut in the PG-13 version...

So, I guess nowadays they just simply DO NOT WANT to keep old customers (fans); all they care about now are those friggin' kids. So, I wonder if it'll be Barney the dinosaur or the Power Rangers who show up to fight the Terminator.

I'm out. OH, and by the way, I WOULD'VE been in for a new Terminator movie! But nope, not now... I'm out! This is sounding like poop... utter poop! (Yeah, that's right, "poop." I'm trying to appeal to the kid market, 'cause that's where it's at! I want parents to bring their kids and drop them off, money in hand, to see my post, and then the parents can just get lost. Who needs 'em? Plus, it's easier to do a post for kids, because I don't have to write a quality post if I'm just aiming at kids. They're dumb enough to fork over their parent's hard earned cash on any piece of doodie that looks cool. So that's my intended audience, now. You grown ups can take a hike... but please leave your wallet with your suckers... oops, I mean, kids... leave your wallet with your kids.)

I don't mean to pick a fight, but you guys must be young.

Live Free or Die Hard pales in comparison the the original Die Hard, which set the bar for so many films to come... DeSouza wrote one of the best action scripts ever, and that was McTiernan (God rest his soul, and yes I know he's not dead, but his career is) at the top of his game. In fact, many regard the first Die Hard as one of the best action films ever made.

Live Free or... was a mediocre action film with plot holes you could drive a truck through, a cartoon-ish (so not John McClane) Bruce Willis, and as a Die Hard film, it was utter shit... Oh, and the PG13 rating? Well, that was insulting.

Sorry guys, but it had to be said.

Oh, and P.S. Alan Rickman was robbed of an Oscar nomination on the first film.

As far as I'm concerned, the series died when James Cameron said "no."

Fuck Halcyon. Oh, and by the way? Reading the quote "Gritty vision" associated with a project directed by McG? Yeah. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

I still think that the PG-13 version of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD was great, even with the benefits of the later, unrated one.

As for this, how can I say what it'll be like? Perhaps the movie could suck even if it were rated NC-17 - I won't know until I see it, and neither will anyone else (sorry to burst everyone's egos...).

Personally, I'd already lost interest as soon as McG was announced as the McDirector of this new McTerminator.

And this is going to be just like Brett Ratner's X3 all over again (that is, audiences will swarm to it on opening weekend 'cause they like the franchise...but the subsequent word-of-mouth will kill it dead before the following weekend).

I think this new terminator having an R rating is more important that the other films. I figured this movie would be a gritty, post-apocalyptic battle between men and machines (like the future scenes in Cameron's films). I'm not saying we need Saving Private Ryan type blood, but I think the battle scenes would be better with an R-rating.

I was soo disappointed with Terminator 3, that a fourth one just didn't seem worth my time till I heard Christian Bale was in it. Now with a PG-13 rating I'll save my $10 and completely avoid it.

Not sure if bringing Bale to the franchise will help anything.

Even Iron Man is PG-13 and looks how awesome and fun it is (at least I had fun watching it). So the new Terminator film with PG-13 might not turn out that bad. Have to wait and see for this.

Nothing about the previous Terminator films really made it a hard R in the first place. Die Hard had a lot of swearing, etc.

Did anyone catch the Sarah Conner Chronicles a few months back on Fox? That obviously wasn't R rated and I thought it was actually pretty good.

Have faith in this film. If that doesn't help, just remember that Bale doesn't simply sign onto films for a paycheck. So the premise and script has to be good already. And that can make a huge difference in enjoying the film regardless of the rating.

Like I said on the forum:

"They could actually pull it off simply because Terminator was rated R because of the self mutilation and damage that Arnold goes through as a cyborg that doesnt feel pain. Terminator 2 copped an R rating for the same reason, plus the assault on police officers.

However considering neither a police department nor flesh covered Terminators exist (yet) in T4 these are not an issue. This is the future war, with less advanced robots as Arnold's model, and then Robert Patrick's, comes further down the timeline.

And it is not like Terminator was known for its language like Die Hard was. So I think a gritty dark future world is definitly doable as a PG13 movie."

So, it _might_ not be as bad as we think...
