It's not Keanu Reeves or that kid from "High School Musical." It's actually, I think, a really good choice: Emile Hirsch. According to Variety, Hirsch is in final negotiations to star in the Wachowski's SPEED RACER, which is set to begin filming later this summer. You might remember Hirsch best from THE GIRL NEXT DOOR and he's done a great job since of playing the chameleon with parts in LORDS OF DOGTOWN and ALPHA DOG. The film's other main roles - Trixie and Racer X - have yet to be cast. The Wachowskis are planning on filming SPEED RACER a la 300, utilizing complete green screen backgrounds. Warner Bros. recently moved SPEED RACER up to May 9, 2008 to avoid a conflict with INDIANA JONES 4, which opens up on Memorial Day weekend. Hirsch can be seen next in the Sean Penn drama INTO THE WILD.

Extra Tidbit: Because Hirsch was 17 when he was filming GIRL NEXT DOOR they had to put pillows in between him and the actresses giving him the lap dances.

I'm actually pretty ppleased with this choice. Speed Racer was a good toon, so hopefully the film will make it better than I remember, cause.....well, nothing against Knight Rider, but we do need more than just a guy and his car racing around saving people.

Also, that sucks about the pillows.

BURN. joblo you kick an insane amount of ass. thanks for sharing the tidbit. i love this casting choice. i'm a huge fan of speed racer and emile hirsch was great in the girl next door.

Thanks Joblo for confirming that and shutting up the Dr. Anyways I think this is a great choice, I really enjoyed him in his other roles. The choice seems just right!

truth and Rumors
I personally like hearing the rumors. If someone confuses a casting rumor as actual truth why is it a big deal? Are you placing bets in Vegas on this information and losing money? Just take the news in stride becuase if it's wrong it always gets sorted out.

I guess Hirsch is a good choice for the lead. Still not convinced this'll be an actual good movie, but then again, I was never a fan of the cartoon. So whatever.

Actually, we have a policy of NOT printing casting rumors unless we specify them as such in our story, so that you folks can DISCUSS it as well.

In this case, Variety has pretty much confirmed it by saying that they're in "final talks", which basically means...he's in. Make sure YOU know the whole story before taking a shot at us. Thanks.
