Aronofsky off Robocop? Dec. 18, 2008

Source: JoBlo.com

I heard some rumors about a month ago that things might not be going well in the universe of the ROBOCOP remake. Namely that Darren Aronofsky, who was hired this past summer to direct the "reimagining," was, let's say, losing interest in the project. Today Aronofsky called in to the Howard Stern Show to promote THE WRESTLER and when asked about ROBOCOP, Aronofsky said that he was working on the script but that he's "not sure" if it was still going to happen adding "we'll see..." Sadly Howard immediately segued into suggesting he be cast as Robocop in the movie and we never got any real follow-up. But it jives with what I've heard and word that Aronosfky's boxing drama THE FIGHTER is heating up. So would you be upset if Aronofsky left ROBOCOP? I'm not saying he's definitely gone but personally I think it's for the best. I'm sure after the success of THE WRESTLER Darren is getting all kinds of offers so we'll have to wait and see how this all plays out.

Extra Tidbit: Aronofsky also said that Dave Chappelle was his first choice for the Marlon Wayans role in REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.

Aronofsky's Robocop:

the scene where (robo)cop gets shot down and killed (to become robocop) is gonna be so graphic intense and awesome.

i can already imagine it.

I'm not happy about the possibility of losing Aronofsky, but it also opens the floor for someone else who may do an even better job. David Fincher, anyone?

Sucks balls. I was looking forward to this movie being a kick ass reimaging. With Aronofsky on board, it was sure to be something interesting, different, and worth watching.

Would be a shame if he left the project, though that's not to say there aren't a load of directors who could do an amazing job with Robocop. Just a matter of one of them getting the gig if Aronofsky drops out.

The only aspect of a Robocop remake that had me interested in the idea was Aronofsky directing, if he's not behind it now I have no desire to even watch the trailer.

Afronsky was a phenomenal choice for a Robocop director, but if he is gone, then my interest dies.

Going into, the movie I was afraid he might not do Robocop but after seeing the movie I convinced myself he would direct Robocop. And now this news, damn I really wanted him to do a big action movie. Set it in New Jersey I don't care, I just want an Aronofsky Robocop really bad. It's him or bust, if he doesn't direct it no one should.

The only reason the Robocop remake looked good was because of Aronofsky. Lose him and you certainly lose me unless they get an equally talented director...which isn't easy...

I would love to see him stay and finish this! So he just made "The Wrestler" next is "The Fighter" hmmmm, then what "The Martial Artist" ,or he should just remake "Kickboxer " and call it "THE Kickboxer"

i think the idea of redoing robocop was lame in the 1st place. it sounded like another movie idea thought of simply to make $, and not make a quality, critically acclaimed product.

He, I thought, was the perfect fit for a Robo 'reimagining.' His leaving the project would be disheartening and I doubt MGM could get anyone worth a damn to fill his shoes.

Let's hope he sticks around, but all the interviews he has given have sounded very lukewarm toward the project, which just confuses the hell out of me. WHy sign on in the first place and then decide you don't want to be involved prior to the script being written?

Something tells me he doesn't want to handle a big-budget film just yet.

There's plenty to explore with RoboCop. The whole forgotten memories reborn and recalled that bring back painful memories of love and all these emotions he just can't "compute," is something that is just very compelling from a storyline standpoint.

I thought Aronofsky saw promise in that.
