A young roof-builder (George Babluani), down to his last few Euros and in desperate need of some purpose in his life, follows a mysterious set of instructions that just might lead him to the payday of a lifetime - or to the very edge of Hell on Earth.
13 (Tzameti) makes Hostel look like a trip to Club Med.

Imagine if you will, that famous scene from Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter (yeah, the Russian roulette scene), only played out over the course of ninety minutes. While The Deer Hunter is certainly not one of my favorite films (I find it plodding and coma-inducing, much to the chagrin of my girlfriend), and I seldom bring it up when I’m referencing a film, that single – and yes, quite powerful – scene seemed like it could have very well been the spark of inspiration Writer/Director Gela Babluani needed when he dreamt up 13’s gripping…and I mean gripping, storyline. 13 is the antithesis of flashy, posturing, bullshit horror. 13 is real deal, down-to-the-bone horror, from the opening frame right on through to the last lingering shot; this sucker does not let up one bit.

It pains me not to be able to just spew-out everything about this film – but that would almost certainly ruin the experience of it. 13 is the kind of film that makes you want to call up everyone you know and tell them how you just had your front teeth knocked out your asshole, and how they have to drop absolutely everything they’re doing, right now, and race out and track this sucker down. It’s exactly that kind of film. What Gela Babluani has accomplished with 13 is breathtaking, and nothing short of cinematic gold. This man knows how to build tension. His keen, masterful sense of scene construction, editing and music cues, turned the screws of dread so taut, I felt as though I was tippy-toeing around a bear-trap. There were moments, honest to God, where I could actually feel the air stolen from my lungs. I shit you not.
At the end of the year when I tally my top ten list of favorites from 2006, 13 could very well be #1; I cannot recommend this film highly enough.
