A group of snowboarders are forced to stay at an abandoned hotel after one of them is injured. Only they are not alone and are soon fighting for their lives.
When I first popped this bad boy into my DVD player I didn't know what to expect. I had never seen a Norwegian flick or to the best of my knowledge one directed by a Norwegian director either. But now that I have I would say that Fritt Vilt should put Norway and director Roar Uthaug on every horror fan's radar.

I remember a time when slashers ruled the world and masked murderers were the heroes of the horror community. Uthaug used scares along with good old fashioned suspense instead of gore to keep me jumping in my seat, and I loved every minute of it. Also the photography is far above average for this kind of flick and the pacing was comfortable, not at all like the quick cuts ushered in by the MTV generation.

The killer, a huge mountain man bundled up in winter gear complete with a nifty pair of goggles that do a good job of hiding his face is an extremely intimidating presence. That and the fact that he is only visible from the waist down or from the back for most of his screen time make him an even more imposing figure than most of the paper thin slasher icons of the last few years.

Another thing Fritt Vilt has going for it is its cast. All of the actors held their own, creating memorable characters that never seemed flat. Along with some kick ass music which was a combination of metal and a chilling score made for some good times in front of the boob tube.

Uthaug did a fine job of presenting the viewer with a modern day slasher with old school sensibilities that makes a lasting impression. The only bad thing I can say about this flick is that it didn't bring anything new to the genre, but I figure if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Just a few trailers is all this DVD has to offer in the extras department.
Fritt Vilt is a slasher flick in the truest sense. It doesn't recreate the wheel but it sure as hell keeps that fucker spinning at full speed. If you enjoyed the original Friday The 13th, Halloween and The Burning you are going to love Fritt Vilt. Also I'm pretty sure that it will also mix well with a few hot women and lots of booze. Good times!
