It's easy to get cynical about the state of horror when so many disposable flicks get green lit by the studios, while exciting fare typically has to fight for life on the festival circuit. Still, even I'm not completely immune to seeing certain projects or events in the future and feeling an awesome sense of, this may really be outstanding

This list is a bit all over the place since it covers both specific movies and events in the horror landscape that have me salivating. I'm particularly surprised to find that not one, but two remakes have scammed me into thinking they could rock.

Spit those bullets below, and let's blaze this new year together, amigos!

5. A Break From The Saw Franchise

Mad props to all those who turned SAW into the biggest new juggernaut in horror, but it's time to take a breather. Anytime a flick like this goes past a third movie it essentially becomes strictly about the gimmick. So as long as the traps stay wicked cool, fans'll keep pumping into theaters to see these. Throwing SAW IV at us right after killing Jigsaw in III was risky, but they more or less pulled it off. Whether through fatigue or intelligence, the powers behind this bad ass mofo have decided not to push their luck. Let us miss SAW for awhile and have a chance to look forward to another one. Quite frankly it had started to feel like an obligation.

4. Cloverfield

I know there are grumbles that CLOVERFIELD can't possibly deliver and that it's on a course for a SNAKES ON A PLANE-like box office performance. Here's the thing. Studios have to worry about box office. Actors, directors and writers have to worry about box office. All I have to worry about is whether the damn thing is a good movie. And C-field is a great concept that looks like it'll probably be just as much fun as SoaP was, box office and over-blown expectations be damned.

3. The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Every once in awhile the independent scene gives us a flick that simply looks brutal, cruel, terrifying and awesome if that sort of fare tweaks your buttons. Yes THE LAST HORROR MOVIE tread similar ground as to the concept, but this one still looks unique and tasty. I am ready to visit Poughkeepsie, although I'd be happy to never have to spell it again.

2. The Wolf Man Remake

Who knows if this sucker is even going to keep its release date late this year, but I can't wait to see it for one reason and one reason only, Benicio del Toro as a werewolf. Plus the initial script had lots of bloody carnage as befits this beast. It's been way too long since we had a great werewolf movie. This could easily be the one.

1. Repo: The Genetic Opera

I may be the only person in the world who's chomping at the bit for this flick, but the cruel reality of my existence is that I love horror and I also love musicals. Make fun if you like, but it's true. Sadly, SWEENEY TODD is a mixed bag for me because it looks exactly like every other Burton/Depp/Carter flick and I'm getting bored with the style. But Repo has a great sound, an awesome concept (repossessing organs - how can you not love it), and the promise of being the ultimate blending of two genres I dearly love. F#cking bliss!

Where did you find that SAW V was confirmed for 2008? Not IMDB I hope. Last I knew they were planning on skipping a year.
