Fans of Tim Burton will likely be aware of his short live-action B&W flick FRANKENWEENIE from 1984, which took the FRANKENSTEIN story and replaced it with a boy (mad scientist) and his dog (monster). It starred Daniel Stern and THE SHINNING's own Shelley Duvall.

If you have the latest DVD release of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, you also have a copy of FRANKENWEENIE, and in that, you'll have Tim Burton introducing the film and dropping the line that he is, in fact, taking FRANKENWEENIE to the stop-motion animation level soon enough.

ComingSoon spoke with Allison Abbate, producer of THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX and Burton's THE CORPSE BRIDE, who dropped a few tidbits about the new FRANKENWEENIE. Here's just a taste: it is possible that the film could well be in black and white, as well as in 3D. Certainly neither option has been ruled out....

Nice! Since the original was in B&W, it would only make sense the re-visioning of it in crazy animation would be B&W, and in 3D to boot. Seems like 3Ds gonna be the new standard from here on out... But don't hold your breath just yet--she also confirmed that the film will take about 2 years to complete. But when it is, how flippin' fun it will be! I'm a big fan of short film, and I can see how making it a full length stop-motion animation would work well. Count me in!
