2013 heads to TV?
Nov. 4, 2009
If my memory holds, and I indeed saw a promo trailer for Roland Emmerich’s end of the world disaster flick 2012 during the Superbowl earlier this year (February), than this has got to be one of the longest, most drawn out ad campaigns for a film in recent history. But check it, according to EW, Emmerich has confirmed plans to adapt his effects-laden epic for the small screen in a TV follow-up series called, you guessed it, 2013.
Since one of the executive producers of 2012, Howard Gordon, also toils in TV fare like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” – Emmerich confessed in a sit down with EW reporters that there’s “plenty to do in a TV show,” adding:
“The plan is that it is 2013 and it’s about what happens after the disaster.” It is about the resettling of Earth. That is very, very fascinating. (2012 writer/producer) Harold Kloser and I came up with the idea and we have the luxury of having a producer on the film who is a big TV producer, Mark Gordon. We said to Mark, ‘Why don’t you do a TV show that picks up where the movie leaves off and call it 2013?’”
At the prospect of such a media shift, producer Mark Gordon says:
“After the movie, there are some people who survive and the question is how will these survivors build a new world and what will it look like. That might make an interesting TV series.”
Wow. I mean, just…wow! I really don’t know how else to say it. What do you all think – is 2013 a good idea, especially given the fact 2012 has yet to hit theaters and determine what kind of demand is out there for a TV spinoff?

Next thing you know...they will end this coming, and final, season of LOST with a cliffhanger fashioned for a big screen "sequel" ...um...I mean, sequels (with an 's').
Geez.
