We've been hearing that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 "is definitely happening" dozens of times since it was announced last year that a screenplay for the film was being written by "Office" scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. However, the last update from Bill Murray made it sound like it was pretty far off.

Channel4.com got a chance to talk to Sigourney Weaver, who of course is promoting AVATAR at the moment, and may have caught the actress dropping a huge plot-bomb (while still confirming that the film is not yet near ready to go).

"I’m afraid to say it [Ghostbusters 3] is happening, I hope people are excited about that. I don’t know if I’m going to be in it, I have had a couple of calls asking ‘would you read the script’.

"I know that my little son Oscar – who was kidnapped from me – I think he has grown up to be a ghostbuster.

"I might be in it; I see nothing wrong with being in it, although I don’t think I will have a big part. I think Bill Murray has a little more to do with it - he might be a ghost."

Pretty wild. I can definitely dig the angle where Oscar grows up to be a Ghostbuster himself, but I'm a little hesitant to get on board with Murray-as-ghost bit. That said, who knows if that'll end up being in the final product. Hell, who knows if Weaver is even telling the truth. To see for yourself, watch the embed of the interview below.

Absurd
I've heard this rumor for the longest time now of Ghostbusters becoming ghosts in a potential 3rd film. Honestly, it's right up there with the Beetlejuice Goes To Hawaii idea on the ridiculous meter.

Why must they keep coming up with these wild and outlandish ideas for sequels when what made the original work so well was its grounded in reality sensibility?

Eh. I have faith in the writers either way.

Venkman no ghost
The grown-up Oscar bit sounds fine (if not predictable) but Venkman as a ghost? I guess if he helps them fight ghosts and has clever dialogue it could work. I think the best bet for this movie to succeed would be for Venkman to be a Ghostbuster and be on screen as much as possible.
