According to Variety, LAND OF THE DEAD has been banned from playing in the Ukraine by the Culture Ministry citing cultural sensitivities. Zombie flick - cultural sensitivities - what the hell is the connection you may wonder?

That was my question too. Turns out the answer is almost as interesting as the film.

Apparently in the 1930's the Ukaraine went through the Holdomor, a famine that resulted in millions of deaths and incidences of cannibalism. As a result, commission member Maksym Rostotsky told the press, "A movie with scenes of people being eaten alive should not be given the go-ahead."

Well I certainly can't get behind censorship, but I guess that's an understandable perspective all things considered. Besides, banning the flick will only guarantee the DVD flies off the shelves in that region.

In case you're interested in more info on the Holdomor you can check out this very informative website.
