More on Blade 2

June 22, 2001

Source: Scifi Wire

Matt Schulze spoke with Sci-fi Wire about his role as a vampire (Chupa) in the upcoming "Blade 2". Schulze plays the leader of a Vietnam kind of crew. "Five people--me, Ron Perlman and a couple other actors--go in to kill these reapers. A reaper is this half-ghost, devil type creature that has the ability to fly. You have to see it. The story is that they've captured Prague. I'm fighting with Blade because I don't like his leadership, so I'm a rebel in that sense, but I'm actually a good guy in the whole element of the picture." Chupa gets in on a lot of action scenes, including a martial-arts battle with 20 reapers and a scene where Schulze said Chupa beats Kris Kristofferson's character, Whistler, to death. Though there is wirework in the film, Schulze says he did all of his fighting on the ground--either hand to hand or with guns. In one of the gun battles, Schulze said, "There's one scene that I have where I kill 150 people, and the whole place blows up, and it's $100,000 a shot, so it's just amazing." Blade 2 is tentatively set for a February 2002 release.

Will Cage be Johnny Blaze?

June 22, 2001

Source: Comics2film

It's finally been confirmed that Nicholas Cage is in early negotiations (for $75 million) to play the character Johnny Blaze in Dimension Film's "Ghost Rider" movie. The movie's writer and producer, David Goyer, said earlier this week that a casting announcement could be coming soon. The rumors about Cage and this role have been circulating for a while, a long while...why don't they just cast him already?

Campbell as Pitfall Harry?

June 22, 2001

Source: Aint-it-cool

A scooper (and Universal Studios' employee) at aint-it-cool reports on a memo he came across at work. The memo contained information about the possible development of a movie based on the Pitfall video game. The project is only in the script stage right now. A couple names mentioned on a possible 'wish list' for this project are Ben Affleck and Bruce Campbell. Let's not hold our breaths...dare to dream though.

3 days left for Halloween

June 20, 2001

Source: Halloween

Only 3 days left for production on "Halloween 8". Steve Newton, writer for the UK horror publication Shivers was a visitor on the set last week, with an article planned for September. Ian Bailey of Canada's National Post newspaper visited the set on Friday. Halloween Movies reports that in total, 8 different media outlets were on set Friday - and all were "wowed" by the Myers house set. Brad Loree is apparently getting a lot of attention from the local media. He has been featured in 4 television stories. More set pictures here.

Fincher and Palahniuk together again?

June 20, 2001

Source: aint-it-cool news

A scooper at aint-it-cool reports that David Fincher is rumored to be interested in Chuck Palahniuk's newest novel "Lullaby". The book is "a comedy/drama/tragedy", and isn't due to be released until September next year. The last joint venture between these two resulted in "Fight Club" so this could be some promising news! "Lullaby" has been billed as Palahniuk's exploration of the horror genre. The story is about a reporter trying to track down every copy of a poem that can kill [the reader] when read (it was previously used to cull the population in Africa when draughts and famines hit). "Lullaby" is reported to be Palahniuk's darkest story to date and supposedly the 1st in a trilogy.

So long Jamie Lee?

June 20, 2001

Source: Horror Report and Yahoo News

Jamie Lee Curtis says the joys of being a mother and her unexpected success as the author of children's picture books eclipse the fleeting pleasures of fame. Curtis said "If I spend the next 25 years of my life working on behalf of children's causes rather than worrying about whether I fit into clothes that are inappropriate, then I did the right thing." She isn't quitting Hollywood cold turkey but it looks like after this next Halloween film we won't be seeing her on screen for a while. Curtis is the official spokesperson for the Children Affected with Aids Foundation and a fund-raiser for children's hospitals in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, she is also spearheading a U.S. program aimed at keeping kids safe and locating missing children. Perhaps we'll see her in some more comedy roles alongside her husband Christopher Guest (creator of "Spinal Tap" and "Best in Show").

Son of the Mummy

June 19, 2001

Source: CHUD

Seems the next Mummy film may not revolve around characters played by Brendan Fraser or Rachel Weisz. The producers want to shift the focus of the next sequel onto an older version of the kid from "The Mummy Returns". Rachel Weisz has already sworn off the series (smart decision!), and Brendan's getting a bit too greedy in his old age. Solution? bring back the kid I spose. Sure it might make money but it sounds like they are trashing what's left of the integrity of the franchise. Well, maybe there wasn't much left anyway.

Looking forward to Trouble...

June 19, 2001

Source: Upcoming Movies

Can you say erotic thriller with cannibalistic sex? Set in Paris, "Trouble Every Day" tells two parallel horrific stories of erotic cannibalism. One is about a woman, who seduces men, has sex with them, and then ends up eating them. The other cannibal is an American honeymooner who asks a biologist friend to supply him with pills to help him with his sex drive, but they increase his desire for blood as well... So mark your calendars to see this French film's limited release on March 1st, 2002. The film premiered at Cannes this past May. Cast includes Beatrice Dalle, Vincent Gallo, Aurore Clement, Alex Descas, Jose Garcia, and Tricia Vessey. Thanks to Greg who said the magic words erotic, French, thriller! woohoo!

Beau Bridges, now that's scary!

June 19, 2001

Source: Canoe

Normally I wouldn't report on what Beau Bridges is up to these days, but since he's working close to my home I figured I'd give him a little respect. He's filming a TV movie based on actual events that transpired during the mid-1990s when a film crew from the documentary TV series "Sightings" filmed some very weird happenings at a turn-of-the-century house in Atchison, Kansas. The Kansas home was said to be haunted by a six-year-old girl named Sally and a woman in her mid-30s who haunted the lone male occupant but seemed to leave his wife and child alone. What seemed cool about this (if done right...) is that the story will supposedly be told from the ghost's point of view. A skeptical director (played by Bridges) and his crew attempt to uncover the truth surrounding the hauntings. Nia Long costars so it can't be all bad. The movie will air on Showtime, no word on when.

Jekyll & Hyde everywhere

June 18, 2001

Source: Really Scary

A couple film versions of the old Robert Louis Stevenson book appear to be on the horizon. Al Pacino has [reportedly] signed on to lead an adaptation of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story. Harold Becker ("Sea of Love") is rumored as the director for the Fox project. Wes Craven has also signed on for a separate adaptation of Jekyll & Hyde for Dimension Films. Too bad it's not the same project, it would be interesting to see a Craven/Pacino teaming...

Craven has a Friend Like Harry...

June 18, 2001

Source: If Magazine

Wes Craven is in negotiations with Miramax Films to direct an English-language remake of the (very recent) French hit "With a Friend Like Harry". No writer or star has been attached to the remake of this very dark comic thriller, which would be produced by Craven and his partner, Marianne Maddalena, through Craven/Maddalena Films. The original film, directed by Dominik Moll, premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival last year. With Miramax as its U.S. distributor, the film has been playing in select theaters. Written by Moll and Gilles Marchand, the film centers on a charming but psychotic man (Harry) who has a run-in with former schoolmate Michel and Michel's wife, Claire. The vacationing couple, with three young daughters, is going through a tough period. Harry stays awhile and sets out to eliminate distractions that might keep Michel from being a successful writer. Harry's attempts to help them gradually expose his murderous side. I caught this film a couple of weeks back and it kicked serious a**! I know it's Wes Craven but still, this movie is a classic in it's original sub-titled form. It's looking like Craven's got quite the full plate with his supposed attachment to the upcoming "Alice", "The Fountain Society", and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".

Bundy takes the big screen

June 18, 2001

Source: If Magazine

Tartan Films has begun production on "Bundy", a biopic about the serial killer. The film is backed by Overseas FilmGroup, which will also be handling international sales. Currently shooting in California, "Bundy" will be the second installment in Tartan Films' serial killer trilogy, the first being Chuck Parello's "Ed Gein". Michael Reilly Burke takes the title role of Ted Bundy, certainly one of the most prolific serial killers in America's history. Bundy managed two high-profile prison escapes before being executed in 1989.

Movie Hole reports that Warner Brothers is in negotiations to pick up Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman's action-adventure story "The Inferno" for Silver Pictures. It tells the story of 12 brave, yet flawed, men who must travel through the gates of hell and close them all before hell is unleashed upon Earth. The film is described as "Dirty Dozen" meets "The Mummy".

The guys over at Diabolical Dominion have the poster for the (eventually) upcoming "Jason X". Should mention that this is a "licensing poster" and not necessarily the official deal. Romero Talks

June 15, 2001

Source: George Romero

On his official site, George Romero recently said the following regarding getting the "Living Dead 4" into production: "Anchor Bay has an offer on the table for a $3-4 million budget. I'm afraid the film might cost $5 or 6 mill. I hope A.B. will agree to taking in a "partner", maybe a European company. If not, maybe private investment can be found. Either way, I am currently working on the script...almost finished... and I am hoping for the best." George also comments that as far as a storyline for the film is concerned, a "fortified city" is central to the plot. Fat Cats and "Smarties" have decided to "reclaim" their lives...despite obvious difficulties, which plays into the "ignoring the problem" subtext. "The only other thing I'm willing to say is that DEAD 4, if it happens, is going to be fabulous... a great big bundle of shock and entertainment that will make you sing and dance all the way to your grave site." Lastly, Romero mentions that his next project will most likely be a film version of Stephen King's "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon".

Sleepaway DVD

June 15, 2001

Source: Really Scary

Anchor Bay has picked up the rights to "Sleepaway Camp" 2 & 3 for release on DVD. The DVD release of the first in the series included an audio Commentary with director Robert Hiltzik and star Felissa Rose. Hopefully they've dug up some more extras for this release. Speaking of Anchor Bay, Argento fans should be happy to hear that they are releasing two Argento DVD's in the next couple'o months: "The Cat O'Nine Tails" and the "Dario Argento Collection Volume 1: Inferno/Phenomena".

Argento's Latest

June 15, 2001

Source: Fangoria

Fangoria reports that Dario Argento's latest giallo thriller is set to start shooting this fall. The project is tentatively titled "Sunglasses". The story is about a film actress who is haunted by her dark past. Asia Argento, who recently had a baby, will not be starring in the film. No word on casting yet.

A not so Final Destination

June 15, 2001

Source: Movie Hole

"Final Destination 2" is once again on the flight path. Producer Craig Perry claims that a script has been put together for the sequel. Perry stated that the script "was very well received." He also commented that the project should solidly build on the mythology of the first. He expects it to be as gritty, clever, entertaining, and as "spectacularly" over-the-top as the first. Perry also attributes part of the [first] film's success to it's minimal use of CGI (amen to that). There was no real call for it in the first so there really shouldn't be any reason for it in the sequel.

Mars site is up!

June 13, 2001

Source: Sony Pictures

"John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars" site is up. In case you haven't noticed, a lot of sites going up as promo material for movies these days are just getting too convoluted with crap (seen the "Moulin Rouge" site? it's just plain silly). Much of the site is still under construction but there is some cool stuff up now. It seems designed more for kids then as a promo piece for adults. It's a little slow and a bit confusing, but that's just my opinion... Anyways, check out the JCGOM site here here.

Diesel no Hellboy

June 13, 2001

Source: Comics2film

Vin Diesel has denied rumors about his involvement in the film production of Mike Mignola's "Hellboy". Diesel commented on his attachment to the project: "Absolutely none, except for my admiration for the project," Diesel said. "This won't be the first time that I find out what my next project is from a team of reporters." Well, I wonder who will be next on the rumor wagon...

Another Site Down

June 13, 2001

Source: Horror Report and NightTerror

We had already heard about Fandom.com going down the tubes, but now it has (for sure) taken Cinescape Online down with it. This totally sucks! Not only to see another site go down but such a good one. NightTerror reports that Fandom.com took over Cinescape late last year. Turns out the domain          Fandom.com has already been taken over and will be up with a new look sometime soon. Unfortunately they can't say the same for Cinescape. Bought your JoBlo and/or Arrow merchandise lately?

Damnation for Connery and Newman

June 11, 2001

Source: Ananova

Sean Connery is set to star with Paul Newman in a movie version of Clive Barker's novel Damnation Game. Warner Brothers is backing the $20 million project. Ananova reports that John Heffernan is adapting the book, and Barker will be producing the film through his company Seraphim Films. Connery may also co-produce the movie, which is due to start filming later this year in New York and Connecticut. An associate to the production stated that "There has been a lot of financial wrangling to get Newman and Connery at a cut rate with a share of the profits to come." Ed Harris, Kim Basinger and Dame Maggie Smith are considering supporting roles. "Damnation Game" has been described as a near perfect horror novel. It is also Clive Barker's first full-length novel. The story revolves around the character Marty Strauss, the bodyguard to a famous industrialist. Marty discovers that someone is coming to collect the soul of his employer as payment for an ancient debt. "Damnation Game" introduces a very cool character known as the Razor-eater, a zombie brought back from the dead but is unaware that he is in fact dead. Inevitable decay and degeneration begins to happen to him which he just assumes to be an unfortunate physical condition. He buys stronger deodorant to cover his rotting smell and make-up to disguise his unhealthy appearance. The novel portrays some especially disturbing gore and brutality...wonder how much of that they'll deal with in the film adaptation. Now there's bound to be mixed feelings from fans of the book on this casting news. Personally, I think that if this cast comes through as planned this could be one kick ass production!

Uma the Man-eater

June 11, 2001

Source: Ananova

Uma Thurman has signed on to star as a beautiful but deadly chef in "The Devil's Beauty". Jean Reno will star as Thurman's lover in the film, which is expected to begin filming early next year. The $10 million production is based on the novel by Laurent Haloche. The story is set at the turn of the 19th century, and focuses on the daughter (Thurman) of immigrants wrongly executed for treason. After witnessing their deaths, she flees to Europe and eventually trains as a chef. She then lures traveling American men to their deaths. Only her lover knows of her practice of using human body parts in her recipes. Very cool!

War of the Worlds Casting Rumors

June 11, 2001

Source: Dark Horizons

Sir Michael Caine is reportedly in negotiations to star in the $42 million budget "War of the Worlds". The project is being handled by Pendragon Pictures which means the film will hopefully maintain it's "independent" stature. It is also rumored that Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey have also been approached to star. AICN's Harry Knowles will supposedly appear in a small cameo "where he dies a horrible, gruesome death on screen". Director Timothy Hines claims that he intends "to cut the film as NC-17 and resubmit until the ratings board allows an R. This won't be from gore and violence, which goes along with the territory in "War of the Worlds", but from the sheer psychological terror that the script invokes".

Michael Myers Interview

June 11, 2001

Source: Halloween Movies

The "Halloween 8" website posts a decent albeit brief interview with Brad Loree aka Michael Myers aka the Shape here. Also worth noting is that Sean Patrick Thomas, who plays Rudy in "Halloween 8", won two MTV movie awards last week for Best Breakout Performance and Best On-Screen Kiss for "Save the Last Dance".

Will we ever see Jason X?

June 11, 2001

Source: Creature Corner

Creature Corner (indirectly) scored an update from "Jason X" director Jim Issac on the status of the film and it's possible release. Isaac claims that one New Line exec has seen it and loved it. Isaac had a meeting with her a few days after the screening and claims that she couldn't stop telling him how much she loved it. All the feedback from anyone who has seen it is great. All of New Line's money and attention has been on their other films that have cost them a bunch of money and are not making them any ("Town and Country" for one). Isaac also says that very soon they will put their resources behind "Jason X", and "you can let the fans know that they are 100% behind the movie and it's still going to get a big release". Also, reportedly it screened recently in Germany and got great reviews. Of course you gotta think, what else is the director going to say? It sucks? not likely.

Images of 13 Ghosts

June 11, 2001

Source: Dark Horizons

Some pictures have been posted of the upcoming "13 Ghosts" at Matthew Lillard's fan site (yes...he actually has one). The film is about a guy and his daughter who inhabit a haunted mansion where the man actually keeps ghosts in special glass rooms. The cast includes F.Murray Abraham, Shannon Elizabeth, Tony Shaloub and more. This film is the second of William Castle's low-budget horror flicks to be remade by Dark Castle Entertainment (1999's "House on Haunted Hill" being the first). Castle's films were best known for incorporating shrewd marketing techniques to both promote his films and capture the audiences imagination; the original "13 Ghosts" handed out "ghost glasses" to the audience so they too could "see" the ghosts just as the on-screen characters would be able to (thanks also to Coming Attractions). Should be cool to see what kind of marketing they go with for this one. You can checkout Matthew's pics here.
