Arrow's thoughts on: The final X-FILES episode

THANK YOU "X-FILES" FOR NINE KICKASS YEARS OF TELEVISION!!!

BE WARNED...MAJOR SPOILERS!

I'll begin by saying a big kiss my pointy bootie to "GLOBAL CANADA" for not airing the X-Files finale on their usual channel. For some reason, they played it on their lesser known sister channel "GLOBAL CH" without letting anyone know about the change of location. Since I didn't have the time to watch the finale when it aired, I recorded it. You guys should've seen my face when I found the 3 hours SURVIVORS cap off (nuke that island already!) on my tape instead of my boy Mulder kicking that government ass. I was freaking PISSED OFF! Lucky for me, after much strenuous net surfing I eventually found the final episode online and got to check it out. LONG LIVE THE NET! I recently heard that after their left field X-Files diss "GLOBAL CANADA" got a mass of complaints from Canuck X-Philers. They are now planning on airing the final episode on their main channel. They didn't say when though...stupid mooks...

Before I go into the last episode which is called "The Truth", here's a little bit of personal history. I started watching The X-Files by fluke. I had gone to see the flick Contact and had come out very disappointed. After the 2 hour buildup the movie put me through I wanted to see some gnarly aliens in the end not David Morse talking mumbo-jumbo. So on my way home from the theatre I  hit a video store in search of a an "extra- terrestrial" fix that would compensate for the time I had wasted on that useless film. I came upon the X-Files Pilot and since I had heard positive things about the show, I brought it home with me. My journey began there and after watching the Pilot I got hooked BIG TIME! The only other TV show that ever affected me to a similar degree was the daring Twin Peaks.  I wound up renting all of the X-Files episodes that I had missed and nailed mucho reruns on TV to catch up. I was totally up to speed by the time the new season began and since then I've never stopped tuning in every week to see my two favorite FBI Agents search for the truth. Yes, you can call me an X-Files fanboy and I'm damn proud of it! History lesson is done, here are my thoughts on the X-Files "coup de grace".

This last "hoorah" satisfied me on most levels. The action oriented opening had me by the balls, the plot twists had me grinning with delight, the court scenes were very engaging, the meeting between Mulder (David Duchovny) and Cancer Man (William B Davis) was sweet and seeing Mulder and Scully (Gillian Anderson) back together again was quite a treat. Their magical chemistry was still so on! Sure this last episode didn't give me any new substantial answers but I really appreciated that it decided to go back in time via flashbacks to touch on every key points of the mythology in chronological order. Over these nine years Chris Carter tossed so much whack ideas our way that it did become a tad rough for me to keep up. Having Mulder stand trial was a brilliant way to communicate in a comprehensible manner how everything is tied together and where we are now in terms of the alien conspiracy. Much to my surprise, the show also brought back some of my old favorite characters. Badass Alex Krycek (Nicholas Lea), shady Mister  X (Steven Williams), relentless toking bastard Cancer Man (William B Davis), sexy Marita Covarrubias (Laurie Holden) and a couple of other well loved players popped up. They're presence actually reminded me of just how amazing the show use to be in its glory days and nostalgia did kick in. Ahhh the good old days...The return of some of the past characters did lead me to my main complaint about the episode though: I thought the whole ghost angle was a bit tacky and I had a hard time buying into it. But in the show's defense, it was the only way to bring some of the old school players back since some of them were RIP.  My minor qualms with the show would have to be: I wanted to see more Super Soldier mayhem (and where was Lucy Lawless's Super Soldier character? I dug her lots!), I kept hoping that the Alien mole (one of the judges) would get a heavy beating, I thought that they broke Mulder out of jail too easily (talk about weak security) and I really wished to see Dogget (Robert Patrick) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) share a passionate kiss (that's the fanboy talking there). They didn't...darn it!

I do applaud "The Truth" for bringing back and finally sending Cancer Man to hell in a fitting fashion. What a way to go for the lad! If the duder comes back after this, I won't swallow it (ironically that's what my last date said too). I also really enjoyed the massive screen time AD Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) was given. He kind of got tossed in the backseat throughout these past two years and it was groovy to see bald boy doing his jive in the forefront again. The new blood was also treated with the respect they deserved. For example, John Doggett has an hilarious come back line that had me in stitches. Mulder sayz: They control the game, they own it. Doggett retorts with a well put: Let's shove it up their asses. YEAH!!!! Man am I gonna miss the old Dogg! Luscious Agent Reyes also gets to shine in this last episode. Her poignant outburst in the courtroom almost had me standing up in cheers (ok, I WAS standing up)...YOU GO GIRLFRIEND! Now I didn't expect "The Truth" to bring me a total sense of closure when it comes to the vast storyline but I did wish for a groovy set up for the eventual X-Files 2 theatrical feature and I kind of got it! Cancer Man reveals the exact date of the imminent alien invasion and I assume that the next movie will be about Mulder and Scully's attempt at foiling it. YIPPEE!

All and all this last episode quenched my X thirst and I found it to be a fitting ending to the series. I'd like to send a big, heartfelt THANK YOU to Chris Carter, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and everybody else that's been involved with this wonderful show over the years. The first 7 years were a landmark in quality television, showcasing very strong and creative writing, atmospheric and stylish directing, engaging and endearing characters while never forgetting to inject some witty humor in there. The X-Files took lots of chances on its run and 98 percent of the time, it pulled it off. I'd also like to send some huge PROPS to Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish. To echo a line from this episode spoken by Reyes: "We came to this job to give it our best and that's the way we're gonna leave". Well both actors did give it their best and in my eyes they came through gangbusters! They stepped in an already established show and found their place. Sure it wasn't the X-Files I knew anymore and the writing wasn't as fresh but I still got into the new shows mainly due to their strong and charismatic presences. I relished Doggett's intense, no bull attitude fervently. He was my kind of hombre. As for Reyes, it took me a bit more time to warm up to her , but in the end, her good nature and pleasant good looks grew on me. Yes, I got to love her too. I know I'm in the minority here but I would've followed these two Agents anywhere. I didn't want the show to end! But now it's over and done with. The jig is up, the parade has passed, the song over. What will I do till the next X-Feature? How will I get my weekly X-Files intake? The withdrawal phase is gonna be rough! I guess there's always re-runs. I'm going to miss The X-Files immensely and am anxiously awaiting The X-Files second jump to the big screen. BRING IT ON CARTER!

THE TRUTH IS STILL OUT THERE!
