While your own appreciation of his movies themselves may vary, there is one indisputable fact about director/destructor Michael Bay: he's the master of the "money shot."

Whether it's edgy cops shooting guns in slo-mo, gigantic robots pounding each other in slo-mo, or just people walking heroically in slo-mo, it's invariably then blended in with zipping vehicles, expended ordnance, enthusiastically mangled metal and continent-sized explosions. Bay serves it all up like a lunatic chef slinging out thundercakes and bowls of gunpowder chowder, and for this, we are grateful.

For further proof, witness the tribute montage (he was just awarded the  Vanguard Award for Excellence in Filmmaking at Showest) for the full glory of dynamic destruction and occasional character moments.

Extra Tidbit: Thanks to 'darkface' for the heads up. Oh, and... There's really still two months before TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN??

@ JohnLocke2342

That scene felt pointless and totally unnecessary maybe if I was high or something I could have found it hilarious coz 'sitcom' humour doesn't always work especially when its taken a step further as in this case.

BTW I also thought the romantic sub-plot was stupid.

I hate to say it ActionFan81 but u gotta take that stick outta ur ass lol.. that scene where he asked the kid "u ever been with a man?... u want to?" got by far the biggest ovation and laughter from the theater I saw it in that I still remember it to this day.

I like the man 'cause he isn't afraid to take action-sequences to extremes and I can't think of any other director who comes close (maybe, John Woo).

Personally I don't care if he's a not versatile director......... However I still haven't forgiven him for BadBoys 2 coz clearly the movie felt like Will Smith & Martin Lawrence ad libbed EVERYTHING especially the scene with that p...

IMHO, I didn't think that was funny.

Michael Bay is a good director. Yes I said that. The guy creates visually stunning movies. There are times in his various movies that get melodramatic and/or very cheesy humor. I can think of a lot of directors that have way bigger issues than that. The Rock - are you kidding me? A GREAT movie.

I enjoy watching Michael Bay's works.

The attack scene in Pearl Harbor is well done and alone worth watching.

However, his best movie is The Rock. Connery and Cage trading dialogue while fighting rogue marines in Alcatraz. Very bad ass.

Transformers had some of the best digital effects I have ever seen. Thanks Bay.

Bay's got a lifetime pass from me since he made "The Rock." Really, one of the best slam-bang action movies of the '90s. And maybe, along with the "Bad Boys" movies, the best example of him mixing drama/comedy and action.

The first half of "The Island" was pretty inspired, too. But then he switched gears and it all fell apart.

"Transformers" was such a technically awesome achievement I forgive it whatever shortcomings it has. That seems to be the movie that ended up garnering Bay more fans than detractors.

btw why can everyone love pathetic shit like crank/2, transporter or stuff like that, which is just awful.. and yet hate bay - who at least has the visual power like no other ever.

I LOVE MICHAEL BAY!!!!!!!!!!

PS. All those shots are amazing but I'm surprised they left out his signature badboys shot (low angle slow mo arc shot of the character standing up looking bad ass)

I saw Michael Bay being interviewed by Jonathan Ross by the time "Pearl Harbor" was released - Michael Bay explicitly said that he wanted to become a serious director and that "Harbor" was his equivalent to "Saving Private Ryan".

So Bay indeed had ambitions to become more than a action director. Luckily he realised his shortcomings and stuck to making big action vehicles instead.

Bay should have been second unit director
No doubt about it, Michael Bay can shoot the hell out of an action scene. But then again, that's about it.

That's why Michael Bay will/can never ever do other types of films except actionsfilms. As long as you need stuff blowing up he's the man. But if you need drama, character or just pure storytelling...

Agreed
I agree with everything the below 6 dudes just said. Come on, you can't hate Michael Bay. It's all already been said, but seriously - his movies are mindless entertainments (when you're not in the mood for Oscar bait) with plenty of explosions... the dude rocks, plain and simple.

Bring on Revenge of the Fallen!

What happened?
Did Michael Bay physically break into your house at night and butt rape you? Seriously reevaluate your anger issues, no one forces you to watch his movies. I personally like the majority of his films, adrenaline rushes are a welcomed respite from Oscar fodder. Get over yourselves, think you can do better? Then do it or shut the fuck up.

Cool
Thx for the shout-out Dave!

I'm a big Bay fan. His movies may not be the Oscar type, but they sure as hell get me into the theatre. He takes his time making movies, doesn't rush- and so far he's done a tremendous job. He deserved that award because he gets people into the theaters, (not just at home on DVD).

Hate to say it
The guy is the master of blowing shit up. He doesn't aspire to be Kubrick or Spielburg or any such director. He just strives to make good action movies. To all the ahters: Do you really think he tries to make FILMS rather than MOVIES? I eman he knows what he's good at, and sticks with it. Better than him trying to be a director that he isn't. I always feel like an asshole for it, but I enjoy 90% of the movies we just saw. I, unlike well.. all of you, don't hate Michael Bay. He's great at what he does. He makes good action movies... with decent characters and big name actors. The scores of his movies are always catchy and pulse pounding, and he always seems to tug at ur heartstrings somehow. He isn't Stanley Kubrick or Wes Anders...

What A Douchenozzel
Michael Bay sucking his own dick in a slow-mo montage of crappy movie bites. How is this is news?

Also, Playboy presents Keri Kendall was surprisingly missing from that montage.
