Bioshock: the movie? Jan. 10, 2008

Source: Joystiq

Without exaggeration, BIOSHOCK was one of the most remarkable videogame experiences I've ever had (and from someone who's been gaming since "next-gen" consoles were Intellivision and Vectrex, that's saying something). The game offered a compelling narrative and a unique world that I genuinely wanted to explore. It created the kind of story that would make a great movie. Assuming, of course, that it doesn't get completely cocked up, like every other videogame movie.

According to Joystiq, an unnamed movie production company has established a rapport with the game's developer 2K, and want to bring BIOSHOCK's amazing retro realm to reality using 300-style green-screen and CG techniques. We've all seen some outstanding videogames get shredded or sodomized in their translation to the big screen, so lets just hope the developers keep the reins tight on their intellectual property.

Set in the 1960s, the game follows a man whose plane crashes near the underwater city called Rapture. Built by a businessman as a sanctuary for brilliant scientists and artists to freely practice their crafts, Rapture fell into chaos as the inhabitants slowly became obsessed with genetic modification.

Some of the game's elements would obviously need to be omitted or condensed to account for the restrictions of time and structure of a feature film, but otherwise it's perfect. Just take the game and put it on the screen, would you kindly?

Extra Tidbit: Earlier in development, BIOSHOCK was set in the near future on a tropical island where Nazi bio-experimentation had taken place.

Bioshock is awesome because you feel like your alone and the whole world is against you. It makes you jumpy and makes you feel like you going crazy. Your character never talks, he has no personality, just the instinct to live.******spoiler******* your character is a puppet who doesn’t realize he is a puppet. *******spoiler******* As you play the game you are immersed in the world of Rapture.

I just don’t know how Hollywood is going to keep the feel of the game. Maybe if the guy who did Dog Soldiers and the Decent directed it, maybe. But even then the powers that be would have to throw in some love story or something to make this more palatable for the public at large and I fear that it would completely change the feeling that the game creates. I just can’t trust that it would stay true to the source material.

I understand the reasons why people would want to see this become a movie. It is a rich and interesting world. It is creepy and has the potential to be a neat experience, but I think the game does a good enough job. There is no need to make this a movie. Mainly because the only people who would want see this movie would have already played the game and had the Bioshock experience.

Completely unnecessary. Like Saw sequels.

However, enough movies have been made from games and been fucked up horribly. I don't see much - if anything - changing my opinions with a BIOSHOCK movie.

If you love the game that much, play it again. I wouldn't be looking forward to having ones' praise of the game being fucked on the big screen.

I LOOOOOOOOVE this game, but NO. As much as I love 300, this movie does NOT need to be made entirely on a green screen. It just wouldn't look right. Just...leave it as the masterpiece it is in videogame form.

Big Daddy's are coming to the big screen!!

I loved playing Bioshock, despite the fact that the entire game creeped me out to no end.

i've been waiting to hear this since i first played it. my dream director for this one would be terry gilliam, of course it's well documented that gilliam and his films never really pan out.

This would be a perfect adaptation. This was truly the greatest game i've played in a damn long time. Then again, the videogame-to-movie process usually isn't pretty. I wonder who'd direct?
