Blu-ray in 3-D!

I'm a recent convert to the Blu-ray revolution (WALL-E and THE FALL are absolutely fantastic) so right now I'm just reveling in the beauty of 1080p. But there are people out there looking into the future. The future, Conan? That's right, they're already thinking about Blu-ray in 3-D. Panasonic has submitted a proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) that would allow for standardization of storing 3-D imagery in high definition. On the surface, Panasonic is saying they're looking for the standard to avoid a format war like the one that plagued the HD disc industry, but let's not forget that they'd stand to make a pretty penny from any such standardization, should it be adopted. The interesting thing about the technology used to bring 3-D to your Blu-ray and HDTV is that it all currently exists. There will be no waiting around for components necessary to deliver the goods. The company says that if they can begin a formal discussion on standardization with BDA before the end of 2008, it is likely that it can be rolled out to consumers in 2010. With more and more films being released in 3-D these days, it was only a matter of time. And once this happens, it's only a matter of time before I become a hermit who never leaves the house.

Extra Tidbit: Just yesterday it was announced that the NFL is beta testing broadcasting live games in 3-D.

Ha ha I love those segments in Conan, seriously though I'd love to see this happen. I had some cool ideas that'll involve 3D, maybe they'll be a cool reality when I'm finished with the Navy. Sweet, sweet.

No Glasses Required
I'm pretty sure this involves an emerging technique that essentially uses tiny lenses to direct the light from each pixel on your TV in slightly different directions - this way they can send unique images to each eye and thus you have stereoscopic 3D without glasses - it's (not exactly) kinda-sorta the same concept as those 3D posters/movie boxes (the kind that when you run your fingernail acro...
I'm pretty sure this involves an emerging technique that essentially uses tiny lenses to direct the light from each pixel on your TV in slightly different directions - this way they can send unique images to each eye and thus you have stereoscopic 3D without glasses - it's (not exactly) kinda-sorta the same concept as those 3D posters/movie boxes (the kind that when you run your fingernail across them it sounds like a scratch pad) - you lose a bit of resolution (each eye only sees half the pixels) but the 3D effect is pretty substantial.

But is this about REAL 3D, or is it just more of that (terribly annoying) green and red thing which crippled JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH's otherwise decent DVD?

Maybe we'll get to see them running forward and back and forward and back for 30 hours every Sunday, instead of right and left and right and left and right and left and right and left.)

But anyway, yeah, I was wondering why they didn't release Beowulf in a 3D version, since I knew they made a big deal of it in theaters. And yeah, I figured the technology shouldn't require any additional equipment besides the glasses, so it seemed to me that we should have seen 3D on DVD by now.

Why does there need to be a standard set at the level of home video? The standards should be set at the production level, as in when the actual photography is taking place. What difference would it make after the movie is already mastered? UNless of course Panasonic is talking about some sort of hardware standard that would allow for some kind of advanced 3-D menuing system for Blu-Ray players...
