One of the most beloved animated franchises of the past decade or so is Dreamworks’ Shrek. Shrek, Donkey and Fiona have become iconic characters in the film industry and they are enjoyed by movie fans of all ages. Of all the characters that I thought that they could do a spin-off with, I really thought that the obvious choice for Dreamworks would be Donkey. However, the first feature-length spinoff coming from Shrek belongs to his feline companion, Puss, voiced by Antonio Banderas.

The film, PUSS IN BOOTS, made its way to theaters in October and did pretty damn good for itself, making $141.8 million for a film that cost an estimated $130 million to make. Daaaaaaamn, Dreamworks, daaamn! Accompanying Banderas in the movie is Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris and Guillermo del Toro (not as a director, but as a character).

The synopsis for PUSS IN BOOTS is this: ”The story about the events leading up to the sword fighting cat's meeting with Shrek and his friends.”

The film has now been announced for DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D. It’ll be arriving on store shelves early in 2012 on February 24. This would’ve been a good movie for Dreamworks to have out in time for Christmas, but alas, its late release in theaters must’ve made that pretty difficult. Ah well… c’est la vie!
