Geek culture has long been on the rise and as such, the time for Hollywood to capitalize on these characters is now. So many comic book movies have arrived in theaters over the past few years and with how awesomely action-packed they are, sometimes we can forget that these characters sprang up from comic books.

Two exceptionally popular characters are respectively from the two major comic book companies. The thing that these two characters have in common is the fact that neither one of them really have superpowers… they both use their wealth and resources to create alter egos to fight crime and save the world. Our first contender is from Marvel. He’s billionaire playboy Tony Stark who is, of course, IRON MAN. Our second contender for today is also a billionaire playboy, but this character reigns from the DC Universe, has a rad butler named Alfred and is none other than Bruce Wayne aka BATMAN.

But before we get into that, let me share with you the results of the last FACE OFF between the two animated films DESPICABLE ME and MEGAMIND. Only 6 of you voted last time and most of you agreed with the verdict of DESPICABLE ME as the winner with the exception of 2 people. Both great movies, but DESPICABLE ME was the overall victor.
Characters
Bruce Wayne is Batman... after witnessing the murder of his parents in Gotham City, he vowed to get revenge on the killer. Bruce trains himself mentally and physically and when he feels he's ready, takes up the mask and the cape of Batman and begins his crime-fighting life. His exceptional intelligence make him the ultimate detective and he uses his skills to hunt down his enemies and bring them to justice with his wit and with the help of an arsenal of innovative gadgets. The one rule that Batman has is simple: do not kill.

Batman is a member of the Justice League.
Tony Stark has a similar-ish story to Bruce Wayne. He's a playboy billionaire who runs Stark Industries after the death of his parents. After an injury leaves a piece of shrapnel in his chest moving towards his heart, Tony has a magnetic plate put into his chest to save his life. During a kidnapping, Stark's captors attempt to force him to create weapons of mass destruction and instead Tony (along with some help) creates the first Iron Man suit, which he later on works to perfect. After that, it's pretty well comic book history... Tony Stark fights crime and saves the world... snarkily.

Iron Man is a member of The Avengers.
Actors
BATMAN is probably the superhero movie with the most big screen adaptations. As such, many people have played Bats over the years including Val Kilmer, Adam West, George Clooney, Michael Keaton and most recently, Christian Bale.
IRON MAN has had fewer adaptations (just Iron Man 1 & 2 and soon The Avengers) and as such, the only actor to play him on the big screen thus far has been Robert Downey Jr. and he’s a damn good Tony Stark. There have been a few voice actors to play Stark in various animated movies and TV series’, but we’d be here a long time if we listed all of those.
Tools and Weapons
Bruce Wayne turns into Batman and since Wayne doesn’t have any superpowers, he relies heavily on bat gadgets to make sure he survives his encounters with baddies. The Batsuit consists of the actual suit of light armour and then Batman has gloves, boots, the bat-mask, a cape and the utility belt… one mustn’t forget the bat-belt. The mask conceals Batman’s true identity and the overall effect of the costume is meant to not only protect Bruce Wayne, but to scare and intimidate the criminals he’s fighting.

The tools that Batman uses to fight crime often vary but some gadgets include batarangs, grappling hooks, night vision goggles, re-breathers, flash and gas grenades, lockpicks, kits for collecting evidence and containing medical supplies, surveillance equipment and tools for summoning one of Batman’s most well-known features: the Batmobile. There are obviously a ton of other things that Batman uses (holy bat-shark repellant Batman!) but we’ll just stick to the mostly more practical things.
Tony Stark’s armoured power suit acts as an exoskeleton that both protects Tony from injury and his identity from the world. In the comics and in the movies, the suit abilities differ drastically, so for the sake of simplicity we’ll stick to what the suit can do in the film since otherwise this would be a very long category. So aside from looking really rad, when Tony Stark is Iron Man, the suit again acts as armor, gives Stark the ability to fly, has repulsor rays as the main weapons and secondary mini rockets.
Love Interests
Bruce Wayne is a billionaire playboy who gets his pick of the ladies and when he’s Batman, well, he gets his pick of the ladies too. In the Batman comics, some of the women in his life include Catwoman aka Selina Kyle, Talia al Ghul, Vicki Vale, Linda Page, Julia Madison, Alfred’s daughter Julia Pennyworth and Silver St. Cloud (one of the only women in Bruce’s life to figure out his alter ego).

As for the movies, love interests have included both Catwoman and Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfieffer) respectively, Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal), Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) and Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman).
Also being a billionaire playboy, Tony Stark has had many ladies in life. In the comics some notable women have included his high school sweetheart Meredith McCall, former fiancée Joanna Nivena, Janice Cord, Marianne Rogers, Bethany Cabe, his lovely secretary Virginia “Pepper” Potts, the Black Widow herself Natasha Romanova and many, many other foxy ladies.

As far as the movie goes, aside from a couple of one-night stands, Stark’s one and only love interest has been his secretary, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).
Batman
Our verdict has chosen BATMAN as the winner. However, in the end, it doesn't matter what our verdict is... because we want to know which character YOU think is better. Agree or disagree with the verdict? Leave us a comment below and tell us why!

Please note that when we ask for you to give your reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the verdict, we expect you to adhere to policy of treating the writer and other commenters with respect. The column does not necessarily reflect the writer’s own views of the characters that are being pitted against one another for FUN and please try to remember that if you disagree, please don’t make it personal.

With that being said… if YOU have an idea for a Face-Off, like what movies you'd like see go head-to-head, let us know! We want to hear about what movies you think would make for a good competition and you can email those suggestions to stephaniecooke@joblo.com and then check back to see YOUR challenge!

So which character do you think is better?

Iron Man
Your out of your mind. Batman is Iron Man's little bitch. What's Batman gonna do? Throw his little baterang at him? Keaton is still the best Batman by the way.

As said below, without the armor Iron Man is just Tony Stark. Sure he is a genius, but so is Bruce Wayne. Put those 2 in a room without their gadets and suits, tell them to fight it out and Tony Stark is in a wheel chair. You forgot to add Wonder Woman to Bats love interests. If WW wants to ride ya....you pretty much won.

Batman definitely has the edge due to his longevity and physical superiority. If we were arguing the merits of Bruce Wayne vs. Tony Stark, I might be tempted to give Stark the edge because he is definitely the more interesting billionaire playboy, but Batman is just a cooler hero, even though Iron Man can do battle all over the world if he wants to while Batman is usually confined to Gotham.

Sorry, but..
..Stark's gear is far superior. Don't get me wrong, I love Wayne's gear, but it can't touch Mr. Starks.

My take on it. What is Iron Man without the suit = Tony Stark. What is Batman without the cowl = Batman. I'll say this, both Batman and Iron Man are in my top 5.

Depends on the Criteria
First off, great read and awesome choice in match-up!

Even though I'm a huge Iron Man fan, I think Batman deserves to win the match-up. But it depends on the criteria...

In terms of overall popularity, I think Batman wins this match-up hands down. Prior to 2008, Iron Man was sadly, a B-level hero for Marvel. But luckily, the film adaptation was brilliant bringing him to the forefront.

In terms of overall popularity, I think Batman wins this match-up hands down. Prior to 2008, Iron Man was sadly, a B-level hero for Marvel. But luckily, the film adaptation was brilliant bringing him to the forefront. Batman has had a stronger history of success in comics, film, and television.

Some say a hero is only as good as his villains, and it's hard to argue against Batman's rogues gallery. Iron Man's arch-enemy can't even be adapted to film without some type of modern reboot to help eliminate the racist overtones. Also, the overall history of Batman comics have been much stronger than Iron Man's run.

But if we are talking about a mano-y-mano fist fight where you just drop the two in an arena with no warning, I have to give the edge to Shellhead. I agree with other commenters that given prep time, Batman would disable the suit easily, but don't discount what Tony can do to adjust for his enemies with some prep (just look at the Hulkbuster and Thorbuster armor). Given time, I think Iron Man's success can one-day eclipse the Dark Knight. But he needs to continue his strong recent run, and expand that to television and the comics as well.

Yeah, Batman is clever. Then again, Tony Stark is also a genius who has to fight dudes with even bigger and better armors than his own, so I guess he's also quite the tactician, meaning Batman is not gonna outsmart that guy and is gonna get his ass kicked, since Iron Man is quite simply stronger (and equally smart)

Batman would have a slight advantage over Iron Man... if he was allowed any of that precious "prep time" his advocates always bring into a debate. But if one day Iron Man suddenly dropped from the sky and and started aiming a unibeam at him, the best Bruce could hope for is a hasty retreat. Tony just wouldn't have that same problem.

While I would still pick Batman on overall cool factor for those saying Batman would outsmart Stark, that guy is no slouch either. And it's not as if Batman can't be outsmarted... Bane gets him pretty good in the comics ya know. So I'd say Ironman would be significantly more difficult than Superman who is easily outsmarted negating the obvious strength advantages he has.

Batman routinely kicks the shit outta Superman so Iron Man wouldn't be a problem at all. Bats would figure out a way to shut down his armor and then he would just heart punch Stark ... game over

Batman is entertaining, but when you pit him against any other superhero he automatically loses. He is essentially nothing more than a rich emo kid who won't stop crying about his parents. Iron Man is going to shoot him in the face.

these categories
are biased towards batman...

gadgets? love interests? obviously batman wins those...how about:

patriotism?
motive?
accomplishments?

i know these face-offs are for fun...but i think iron man may win a few more general categories...

that said, batman is obviously the cooler of the two!

Not that I disagree with your point, but I'm pretty sure Batman would still win Motive and Accomplishments.

Batman. He may not have the firepower of Iron Man but Batman is smart and cunning. I'm pretty sure he can outsmart Iron Man and find a way to disable his armor.

Outsmart him? Do you seem the difference in the armor quality of the two? Iron Man is clearly the smarter of the two. Besides, Batman would have a hard time outsmarting him when a missile blast through any of his weapons and hits him in the face. Just saying...

This is a non-contest. Only Batman could come up with a plan to go up against the whole JLA if any or all of them ever turn bad. And who the hell even thinks of creating a split personality from Zur-En-Arrh in case he comes under psychological attacks?
