Since this column launched, we’ve seen a variety of movies (and even directors) go head to head to see who reigns ultimate. The release of The Muppets on DVD and Blu-ray this week put me in the mood to watch some family friendly movies and since I know all my Disney movies off by heart, I decided to re-watch a few movies that I hadn’t seen quite as many times.

As mentioned, I’ve seen each classic Disney movie countless times and while I love them, I really wanted a battle of the anti-heroes for this week’s Face Off. The two films that come to mind are of course, DESPICABLE ME and MEGAMIND. So let’s get right into the breakdown and figure out which film reigns supreme.

…But first, let me just quickly add in that the last Face Off put Daniel Craig’s Bond films head to head and the decision as to which one was the real winner was left up to you. Our verdict determined that CASINO ROYALE was the champion, but did you agree? Unanimously you voted and the overall winner remains Craig’s first Bond film. Maybe Skyfall will give CASINO ROYALE a run for its money.
Story
DESPICABLE ME is the story of a Gru, a criminal mastermind who wants nothing more than to be the world’s greatest villain. The majority of his existence is spent trying to come up with new ways to be bad. However, Gru gets a little more than he bargained for when he adopts three little girls as part of one of his plans.
The story for MEGAMIND is all about a supervillain who, after a very lengthy battle between himself and his nemesis, wins and loses his sense of purpose once he no longer has someone to go up against.
Titles
For the most part, kids movies aren’t really known for having exceptionally clever titles. They need to be simple so that kids remember them and I think a lot of the time, the fewer words there are, the better. DESPICABLE ME is a fun title for the film since it doesn’t really directly tell you what the film is all about. Once you’ve seen the film, it makes sense, but you probably wouldn’t be able to tell what it’s all about just from the title… but I think that might be part of its charm. It’s interesting and different and sets it apart a little bit from other films.
MEGAMIND gets right to the point as far as titles go. You probably wouldn’t know it right away, but it tells you the main character of the film and it gives you a hint about what he might look like as well as a hint about part of his personality, in the sense that he’s exceptionally smart… sometimes.
Cast
Animated films can draw in some pretty big stars and DESPICABLE ME is one such film. The list of awesome actors includes Steve Carrell as our antihero, Gru and Jason Segel as Gru’s nemesis Vector. We then have Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Miranda Cosgrove, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Jemaine Clement, Jack McBrayer, Danny McBride, Mindy Kaling and Ken Jeong.
Starring in MEGAMIND is Will Ferrell, as our self-titled protagonist and lending their voices to some of the many other characters in film are Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross, Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and J.K. Simmons.
Sidekicks
In DESPICABLE ME Gru has an army of tiny yellow minions who do his biding and live to please him.
MEGAMIND doesn’t have an army of yellow minions, but he does have one singular minion, who is appropriately named Minion. Minion is a fish that lives in a bipedal suit that Megamind created for him.
Despicable Me
Our verdict has chosen DESPICABLE ME as the winner. However, in the end, it doesn't matter what our verdict is... because we want to know which film YOU think is better. Agree or disagree with the verdict? Leave us a comment below and tell us why!

Please note that when we ask for you to give your reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the verdict, we expect you to adhere to policy of treating the writer and other commenters with respect. The column does not necessarily reflect the writer’s own views of the films and these films are being pitted against one another for FUN and please try to remember that if you disagree, please don’t make it personal.

With that being said… if YOU have an idea for a Face Off, like what movies you'd like see go head-to-head, let us know! We want to hear about what movies you think would make for a good competition and you can email those suggestions to stephaniecooke@joblo.com and then check back to see YOUR challenge!

So which movie do you think is better?

I agree
I get to watch a lot of these movies because I have two young sons and with these two films in particular, I have always struggled as to which one I liked more. I found Megamind had better laughs overall and was more visually engaging but Despicable Me is definitely the better story.

Agreed
Both good movies, but Despicable Me felt like a universe I want to know more about. Plus the little yellow guys from Despicable Me are just great, every time they stepped(or floated) on the screen, you knew something funny was coming up. Looking forward to the sequel.

MEGAMIND
I thought MEGAMIND was way better. DESPICABLE ME was okay, but MEGAMIND was freaking hilarious with some nice action scenes and killer voice acting.

Despicable Me works if you're a parent. As for Megamind it's probably one of the more subversive superhero movies out there. In terms of rewatchablity they are about even.

This was a great Face-Off article and I totally agree that Despicable Me edges out Megamind, even though I liked both very much.
