Welcome back to The Face-Off, the brand spankin’ new column here in the Digital Dorm. If you missed the last Face-Off, we pitted the zombie comedies Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead against one another! Our verdict was Shaun of the Dead, but YOU decide who the REAL winner is and who won? Well… it was completely unanimous and the winner was: Shaun of the Dead!

Today on The Face Off we have two classic comedy films. What's the common denominator? Funny man Adam Sandler stars in both of them. Both of these movies are awesome, both films are hilarious, but which film when it comes down to it, do you love the most? The contenders are BILLY MADISON and HAPPY GILMORE.
Titles
BILLY MADISON is a simple and straightforward name for the film. It sums up the main focus of the film and tells you right off the bat who the main character is.
HAPPY GILMORE is also straightforward for a title. I think it's safe to say that most of Sandler's films are like that. Again, the title tells you who the main character is and what the focus will be. As far as these two titles go, HAPPY GILMORE just has a better ring to it than BILLY MADISON, which I feel could easily be confused for Billy Elliot, the movie about the kid who just wants to be a ballet dancer.
Directors/Directing
BILLY MADISON is led by lady director, Tamra Davis. Davis is responsible for other works such as Best Men, Half Baked and a whole whack of various TV episodes including Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, Men In Trees, My Name Is Earl, Everybody Hates Chris and Single Ladies.

But regardless of what Davis has done in her career, the question is pretty simple: did she do a good job with BILLY MADISON? I think the movie speaks for itself and it remains one of Adam Sandler’s best films. Of course, none of that is possible without the work of the director.
HAPPY GILMORE is directed by Dennis Dugan who is responsible for The Shaggy Dog (The TV movie), Beverly Hills Ninja, Big Daddy, Saving Silverman, National Security, The Benchwarmers, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, Grown Ups, Just Go With It and wait for it… Jack And Jill. Yes, this is the monster that brought us that movie. Additionally, Dugan has also dabbled in TV and has directed episodes from shows like Moonlighting, Burke’s Law, Love Boat: The Next Wave, Ally McBeal, Colombo, NYPD Blue and Hope & Faith.

Despite the fact this is the horrible person that brought us Jack and Jill, let’s face it, Dugan is not the worst thing to happen to cinema *cough Uwe Boll cough*.
Cast
Starring in BILLY MADISON is Adam Sandler (of course as title character Billy Madison), Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Norm MacDonald, Bradley Whitford and Darren McGavin.

CAMEOS: Chris Farley plays a bus driver.
And starring in HAPPY GILMORE is Adam Sandler (again as title character Happy Gilmore), Julie Bowen (who you’ll know from Modern Family), Frances Bay, Kevin Nealon and Christopher McDonald.

CAMEOS: Bob Barker in an AMAZING cameo as himself and Ben Stiller has a cameo as the retirement home manager for the building Grandma Gilmore moves into.
Soundtracks

• “Telephone Line” by Electric Light Orchestra
• “ABC” by Jackson 5
• “I’m Not The One” by The Cars
• “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” by Culture Club
• “Beat On The Brat” by The Ramones

Additional songs by Sharon, Lois and Bram, Billy Squier, Styx and two songs written by Adam Sandler.

• “Tuesday’s Gone” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
• “Kiss You All Over” by Exile
• “Money (That’s What I Want)” by Janie Bradford
• “Wooly Bully” by Sham the Sham and the Pharoahs
• “Jump Around” by House of Pain

And a few more artists that grace the soundtrack include Pilot, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie, Kansas, Carl Weathers, Gary Glitter and uncanny Alliance.
Entertainment Value
There are few movies starring Adam Sandler that can actually be taken seriously. His movies are funny, ridiculous and the sole purpose of his movies are to make audiences laugh. Sandler doesn't appear to be out to win any Oscars and BILLY MADISON is definitely a fan favourite.

The premise is quirky but it works with Sandler's style. It's not a comedy where the film is funny because of its relatability, it's funny because it's outrageous and even endearing at times. The cast seemingly has a lot of fun making the film and it really shows with the final product.
HAPPY GILMORE is also one of those movies that isn't necessarily funny because its relatable. Sure, it's got moments where you can think to yourself "Ha! That happens to me ALL the time!" but for the most part, a crazy hockey player turned professional golfer isn't going to make a lot of people go "Ah yes... I know EXACTLY what he's going through..."

The cast is great, the cameos are great (especially Bob Barker's) and the film as a whole is hilarious and is definitely up there with the best of Adam Sandler.
Happy Gilmore
There are so many Adam Sandler movies to talk about that I’m sure that this isn’t the last time we’ll see him on The Face-Off. However, out of these two films, our verdict has concluded that HAPPY GILMORE is the stronger film. As previously mentioned, both ARE hilarious and both are comedy classics, so making a decision between these two will be tough, but let us know who YOU think should win this Face-Off and why!

If YOU have an idea for The Face Off, like what movies you'd like see go head-to-head, let us know! We want to hear about what movies you think would make for a good competition and you can email those suggestions to stephaniecooke@joblo.com and then check back to see YOUR challenge!

So which movie do you think is better?

Happy Gilmore
BILLY MADISON isn't very good in my opinion. I do like HAPPY GILMORE, but not because of Sandler. What makes it funny is the supporting cast, although Sandler isn't nearly as annoying as he is now.

Happy Gilmore for me. I laughed my a** off every time at the scene where a guy was paid off to mess with Happy at the golf game - "Jackass".
