Face-Off: Real Steel vs. Transformers 3
Jan. 27, 2012

For last week’s Face Off, we pitted action movies Red and Wanted against one another. Our breakdown led the verdict to come out as a tie, but in the end, it’s all up to YOU. So which movie triumphed and came out victorious? This was the first Face Off (thus far) where the decision wasn’t completely unanimous and one movie won over the other by a meager ONE vote. So who won? Like I said, the runner-up came awfully close, but in the end, Wanted took the lead and won last week's Face Off!
This week, the film Real Steel arrived on DVD and Blu-ray. And it got me thinking about what would happen if Atom went head-to-head with Optimus Prime from Transformers. Of course, that fight only takes place on my head and unless I want to write a fanfiction about it, it’ll stay that way. The next best thing is putting the characters respective movies head-to-head for this week’s Face Off... REAL STEEL vs. TRANSFORMERS 3: DARK OF THE MOON.

Titles
If I knew nothing about REAL STEEL other than just the title, I think I would probably assume it was a movie about construction workers or something. The title doesn’t exactly give off the vibe that this movie is about robot boxing. Lots of people have suggested that a more appropriate title for the film would’ve just been Rock Em, Sock Em Robots and I think something along those lines would’ve worked a lot better.
TRANSFORMERS 3: DARK OF THE MOON isn’t exactly a great title either, but while it is a bit wordy, it isn’t too bad. It tells you that this is part of the Transformers movie franchise and it implies something dark and foreboding on the moon. Which pretty well sums up what the whole movie is about.
Directors/Directing
Shawn Levy is a name that you’re probably not too familiar with. He does have a few titles that you’ve probably seen though like Date Night, the 2006 Pink Panther, both Night at the Museum films, Just Married, the 2003 Cheaper by the Dozen, Big Fat Liar and he’s directed some miscellaneous TV series episodes.
But the question here is how does he do with REAL STEEL? I think that this film has trouble deciding what kind of film it wants to be. Is it a family film? Is it an action film? Is it a futuristic drama? The direction of the film is a bit off and while the concept of the film is based off a really interesting story (titled Steel by Richard Matheson), the film didn’t really contain any of the charm that original story (or the episode of The Twilight Zone that adapted it) did.

Michael Bay is a name that most movie buffs are familiar with. He’s known for making things go BOOM! in his movies. Some of his more notable works include Armageddon, the previous two Transformers films, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys I and II and The Island.
As far as his work in this film though, how does he do? Well, I think that TRANSFORMERS 3 is the strongest film from the franchise, but is it a good movie? Sure, it’s entertaining, but I don’t think that Mr. Bay goes above and beyond his call of duty as a director to make it that awesome.

Cast
REAL STEEL has a couple of big names including Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Hope Davis, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand, but the film’s main star is child actor Dakota Goyo (who looks like he could be Justin Bieber’s kid brother… or demon spawn!).
TRANSFORMERS 3 stars Shia LaBeouf (meh), Rosie Huntington-Whitely (who was surprisingly decent in the movie… maybe she got action film pointers from beau Jason Statham), Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey (aka Dr. McDreamy), Frances McDormand, John Turturro, John Malkovich and Alan Tudyk (who was my favourite part of the movie!) with voice actors Peter Cullen, Leonard Nimoy and James Remar.

Entertainment Value
REAL STEEL definitely had a premise to be a brainless, entertaining flick, but was instead just all over the place. But let’s ignore the bad and try and focus on the good… like Evangeline Lilly as a sexy, robot mechanic/robot gym owner. Or SORT OF SPOILER when Hugh Jackman gets the crap kicked out of him by Kevin Durand END OF SORT OF SPOILER. How about the robot fighting action? Some of that was also pretty awesome (sans dancing).
With any Transformers movie, you can expect mindless action and explosions (courtesy of Michael Bay, of course). You can expect lots of eye candy and you can expect big, extremely high budget action sequences. Is TRANSFORMERS 3 enjoyable? Sure, at times. Is it action-packed? Sure and again, it's full of lots of things going BOOM! including a ton of things that shouldn’t be able to go BOOM! like lampposts and trees.
Transformers 3
TRANSFORMERS 3 took the win on this one according to our breakdown. I was tempted to give REAL STEEL the points for Cast because of Evangeline Lilly, but Alan Tudyk and pretty well everyone else save Shia LaBeouf convinced me to give the point to them. But putting our verdict aside, which movie is YOUR favourite? Did you enjoy REAL STEEL and the robots duking it out in the ring or did you enjoy TRANSFORMERS 3 with its alien robots duking it out on Earth?

The ONLY film you left out of his filmography was THE ROCK. Guess that wasn't all that "notable" to you...
