The action in 2 Guns doesn’t stem from when each will find out (it happens relatively early on), but rather the $43 million they’re lifting from drug lord Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos), which actually belongs to Earl (Bill Paxton), a CIA agent in a bolo tie. That’s a simplified version of the overly complicated plot, which has too many characters and not nearly as much originality as screenwriter Blake Masters wants it to.
The title 2 Guns is a bit of an understatement. Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur’s (who directed Wahlberg in Contraband) actioner is loaded with the amount of firearms, explosions and bullets that action fans need in their Saturday night.
The real draw, though, is the leads. Washington and Wahlberg each has a number of action flicks in their resume and can easily get their way around any variety of antagonists. They seem to be the only ones aware just how mediocre, predictable and generic the whole show is; and it’s the nodding and winking, and the fact that they’re enjoying themselves, that makes 2 Guns more fun than such fare might normally be.
