WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A narc (Diesel) busts a top drug dealer, after which, a hit is put on him. He survives the attack, but his lovely, “perfect” wife does not. Now a broken and very angry man bent of revenge, our shaved head muscle boy aims to take down the whole cartel flying solo. Does he pull it off? Hey man...it's Vin “freaking” Diesel in charge here! What do you think?
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Revenge is a primal emotion, one that we can all relate to on some level. I’m a sucker for revenge films, the theme just stirs me like a Martini. A MAN APART had all the right ingredients to deliver a powerful and crowd pleasing testosterone heavy jamboree: a broken man, shootouts, explosions, strip clubs and macho posturing all around. Sadly, a good script to bring it all home with impact was MIA. The screenplay here was basically all over the place, contained way too many "blah" side characters (Olyphant rocked though), had some plot holes and sported an ending that was anti-climatic to say the least (where’s the payoff?) It’s unfortunate really, with a tighter pace and a more focused storyline, this one could’ve been an above average effort.

There is one big reason to see this film though and that is Vin Diesel. I always believed Diesel to be a good actor before the XXX fiasco tarnished his skills, but he gets to prove himself again here. It was great to see our boy convincingly play “romantic” in the early scenes and when the cookie crumbled, damn did I feel the man’s pain, anger, vulnerability and emotional breakdown. Diesel gives an intense and gripping show and I for one couldn’t take my eyes off him. On a more superficial level, I can also think of worse ways to murder time than by witnessing a goateed Vin Diesel kicking the shit out of people and I mean KICKING THE SHIT OUT OF PEOPLE! Let’s just say that when Vin asks “What did you say to me?” to a thug in this movie, get ready for some delicious macho bullshite fun to ensue. YEAH!! And don’t offer him a lap dance, that’s for damn sure! He don’t play that game! Now let’s get aggressive.
THE EXTRAS
7 Deleted Scenes (approximately 1-2 minutes each): We get 7 deleted scenes (that we can’t play all at once-- that sucks) which didn't bring anything to the film, so thank God they got snipped-snipped. Nothing to see here.

We also get the Theatrical Trailer, a DVD Rom option and More from New Line which offers trailers for RUN RONNIE RUN (what is this garbage?) and HIGHWAYMEN (I’m there!)
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Without the Vin-Machine as the lead, this would’ve been just another TV movie of the week, but with more violence, razzle-dazzle and cuss words. The DVD itself is solid audio/video wise, but goes Slimfast on the extras, so buying it for the goodies isn’t an option. I do believe that the Vin fans of the world might get some jabs out of the movie if they don’t get totally put off by the wandering and “ho-hum” plotline. Vinnie’s raw and touching performance is the first good reason to see A MAN APART, with the second being his merciless pummeling of scumbags. If that talks to you (it did to me)...hit it.
