WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In a land where fishing is a metaphor for religion, family, and brotherhood, two brothers travel from boyhood to manhood. The time is the 1920s, the place is Montana. Director Robert Redford turns this beloved novel into a cinematic delight full of scenery, symbolism, and realistic characters.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Coming of age dramas are popular because they are so accessible. My brother and I watched the film together, constantly remarking to each other similarities and familiarities. Im sure just about everyone has snuck out of their parents house and come back with mom and pop waiting up. Its these moments that make A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT not only relevant but enjoyable. Much like the Maclean brothers grew up in the West, me and my brother grew up in Wyoming. I firmly believe that Robert Redford and cinematographer Philippe Rousselot captured the look of this area with a certain graced so much so that they won an Academy Award for it.

One of the few instances where the character development exceeds the novel is present here. Redford worked close with author Norman Maclean to get the basic story down pat whilst bringing out more of each character. The casting is dead on. We see most of the film through Normans eyes and Craig Scheffer does a great job rooting us in the story. Tom Skerritt as the minister/father is money. The show stealer is a dashing Brad Pitt who plays Normans brother, Paul. Pitt exudes a natural brotherly energy and when he slips into a self-destructive state, you REALLY feel bad for him. This is definitely one of Pitts best roles ever. Theres so much more I could put down about this movie, but in the end you just need to see it for yourself! This is a great American drama from a golden time in the history of the world.
THE EXTRAS
For the special features, we get something different. Included in the slipcase is a 32-page book, completely exploring the film from adapting the novel to an interview with Redford. Theres also vintage advertisements and thoughts from the Maclean family. In all honesty I rather enjoyed this over a plethora of EPKs. The booklet is beautiful and seems more personal, rather befitting the material. Fans of the movie will enjoy the contents Im sure as this doesnt seem to be a cop out. The only additional feature I would have liked to have seen was a commentary track by Redford.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT is an excellent choice for a family drama or those looking to recapture that spirit of youth. Its a great American tale, wonderfully crafted by Redford and Co. It also features Brad Pitt at his best. The DVD quality is solid with a great companion booklet but no additional extras. I highly recommend it!
