WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A young, white lawyer is hired to defend a black man on trial for gunning down two men that raped and beat his young daughter. The lawyer enlists the help of a bright law student while the families of the murdered men turn to the KKK. Racial tensions explode as justice becomes more and more difficult to see.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
A TIME TO KILL kicked off the John Grisham movie craze that has entranced the mid-90ís. Grisham is an artist of mixing in his political messages in between intense sequences involving sexy leading men and women. If you can get past the preaching and over dramatization, you might actually be able to enjoy this smart legal thriller that will spark debate and discussion amongst anyone you watch it with.

It wasnít his first film, but A TIME TO KILL was the movie that proved to me that Matthew McConoughey could carry his own film. To date, this is one of his best performances and he carries this sensitive film with an ease and confidence that is still very impressive given the fact he hadnít done many films at this point. The whole cast does a fine job, although Bullock was a little annoying at times. I had forgotten that so many famous people were in this, including Ashley Judd, Donald and Keifer Sutherland and Oliver Platt.

The best thing about A TIME TO KILL is still the fact that it will spark a debate between people regarding everything from racial equality to the death penalty. Although itís clear John Grisham is against the death penalty, I liked the fact that he shows a different side to the story by making it okay for someone to kill in anger, but not okay for the government to kill someone in the name of justice. I think we all have our views on the subject so Iíll let you debate amongst yourselves.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
I really enjoy A TIME TO KILL, but if you already have the DVD, this isnít worth the upgrade. The audio and video were great, but without any special features, Iím not sure itís worth the $20 upgrade fee.
