WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
When a mission to recover a kidnapped CIA operative unexpectedly results in the discovery of an imminent, terrifying global threat, an elite team of highly trained Navy SEALs must immediately embark on a heart-stopping secret operation.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
AMERICA, f*ck yeah!
Coming again to save the motherf*cking day, yeah!

That song pretty well played through my head the entire time I was watching ACT OF VALOR. I guess as a Canadian looking on at this movie, I can take away a different perspective on the film. First of all, this probably wouldnt be something that I wouldve watched on my own, its just far too rah-rah-rah AMERICA! for me. I can see the appeal of the film to Americans, especially ones with family or friends in the army, but it wasnt something that really hit a chord with me.

It was a really interesting idea to try and use actual active duty Navy Seals. It does give the film an air of realism in the action sequences. However, outside of those sequences, the fact that theyre not actually actors really shows in their line delivery and often took me out of the moment. Additionally, since the film is going for the whole realism bit, a lot of Navy Seals slang is used and as a result, half of the time I dont know what theyre talking about. I almost felt like subtitles were needed to explain to me what they were on about.

Another way that the filmmakers were trying to convey the whole realism deal was with the camera effects. Every now and again, the perspective would shift to first-person and actually made me feel like I was playing Call of Duty instead of watching a movie. In some ways, thats not necessarily a bad thing, but it was a bit awkwardly done and I couldve lived without those shots.
THE EXTRAS
Deleted scenes: Your typical run of deleted scenes. Nothing particularly good that stood out to me. All of them are cut from the final film for a reason. But if you liked the film, its a little more footage for you to look at.

Interviews with the seven SEALs who starred in the film: The interviews mainly focus on how and why each of these individuals joined the SEALs in the first place and what their experience has been.

The Making Of Act Of Valor: A look behind the scenes at the production of ACT OF VALOR. Cast and crew talk about what it was like working on the film and why it took two years to make.

Real Bullets: The cast and crew talking about shooting live fire scenes for the film.

Real Seals: Some of the footage from this feature was used in the Making Of bonus feature, but basically its just a talk among the cast and crew about the Navy Seals and what it was like having real warriors cast in the film.

Silent Warriors: Another feature about the Navy Seals and why the filmmakers decided to use real warriors for the movie.

Keith Urban's "For You" music video: Well, this is pretty self explanatory. Its a music video for the song that was created for and used in the film. Theres an additional Making-of featurette for the music video which is a separate feature that you can watch.

Additionally included is a Director Commentary as well as a Directors' Introduction.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
I can respect what the filmmakers were trying to achieve when they decided to make ACT OF VALOR, but I can safely say that I am definitely not the target demographic for it. Its hard to say whether or not someone with army experience would find this film enjoyable and accurate to what they know, but for me it just wasnt my cup of tea.

Truthfully, in my eyes, it kind of played out like a long ad for the US Army, like the ones you see in theaters before your movie starts.

"Navy" SEALs, but yeah...

It is a promotional ad for the military. Two of the action scenes were cool, the others weren't. The movie is terrible overall. But for great audio/visual splendor I recommend a 20 minute viewing amidst a majority of fastforwarding.
