WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A ship malfunction in space leaves a father and son stranded on Earth years after we engineered its destruction. With his father injured and dying, Kitai must embark on a solo journey across hostile territory in hopes of salvaging the rescue beacon from the tail end of the ship.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Initially, upon seeing the trailers, I was excited for this flick. I love me some Sci-Fi, and with Will Smith on board (I find Jaden tolerable after surprisingly enjoying THE KARATE KID, but he’s still no Daniel Laruso) how bad could it be? And then the reviews hit the web and EVERYONE took a steaming dump on this movie. My personal favorite is the recent Honest Trailer review—which is hilarious, but after seeing the movie I think he was a little hard it. As a matter of fact, I think everyone was a little too hard on this one. It’s nowhere near the shit show people made it out to be. I went into it thinking I was going to hate it, but in all brutal honesty, I enjoyed it.

Now before you string me up and burn me at the stake, let’s examine a few things that most people had a problem with. One, Will Smith’s robotic character. To be fair, dude’s a highly decorated military veteran, and it’s not like he’s in the peacekeepers division so I think we should cut him some slack. Ghosting (a very cool concept) is clearly about turning off your emotions, not to mention the fact that his future is a tad bleak. Also, he’d been letting his guard down prior to his ‘incident’ which hardened him up and forced him to be a crappy father to his son. The dynamic between father and son is explained in a believable manner, so I don’t get the rage (sorry, I had to). Another big gripe was with the cold on Earth. Now I’m no historian, but I thought the Earth survived an Ice Age, which didn’t wipe out all the vegetation and what not, so getting angry at the fact that plants, animals and everything else on this ‘other Earth’ have evolved to endure the freezing cold seems a little weak. I’m not saying it makes one hundred percent scientific sense, but it’s at the very least believable. There are tons of ‘little things’ people decided to pick on, but when viewed as whole, I felt they worked for the most part.

AFTER EARTH is the perfect film to watch at this point, because everyone has bashed it to the point that you’re going in with no expectations whatsoever. True, there’s still a good chance you’ll hate it for the sake of hating it, or you just might find it too absurd to deal with. Personally, I think the pace was there, the journey/quest was there, the final battle was awesome, and the father and son dynamic (though obviously predictable) was handled pretty well. Is this a perfect movie? Hell no. Is some of the dialogue cheesy? Sure, but show a movie that doesn’t have at least a couple cheesy lines. There’s always room for improvement, just as there’s always something to bitch about if we’re holding this under a microscope, but bearing that all in mind, as far as Sci-Fi flicks go, this reminded me a bit of OUTLANDER—which I loved—and if you go in with an open mind like I did, there’s a good chance you’ll be surprised.
THE EXTRAS
A Father’s Legacy: Cheesy as it may be, I kinda dig the idea of Will and Jaden re-teaming for another father/son flick. This gives us a peak at the real life father/son dynamic they share off screen as well as on.

Alternate Opening: Not gonna spoil it, but pretty cool…if you’re into this flick.

Building a World: Kinda calling bullshit on this one as everyone talks about all the work that went into creating this ‘new Earth’. Let’s be honest, there’s nothing overly special about it.

Pre-Visualizing the Future: Some of the various un-used ideas show via animation scenes. Interesting.

The Animatics of After Earth: A quick look at the animatics used in the film. If I had to complain, I do feel more time could have been spent dealing with Earth’s new obstacles rather than simply dashing through and around them.

1000 years in 300 Seconds: Much like it sounds, we get a very quick behind the scenes look at a couple clips of the film.

The Nature of the Future: A more in-depth look at the gorgeous locations used in the film. It may have been dangerous, but it looked beautiful.

XPrize After Earth Challenge: Ironic that a film about us destroying Earth sports a big debate on how we can save it. I love Hollywood.

Previews: There’s a handful of trailers, as well as a DVD and Ultraviolet Copy of the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
It’s easy to hate a movie when it’s the ‘in thing’. Another example was GREEN LANTERN, by no means a perfect film, but one I enjoyed for what it was and feel people beat down a little too harshly. This flick isn’t perfect, but I’ve sat through much worse, and though it won’t be anytime soon, I’d definitely watch AFTER EARTH again.

Thank You!

I saw this in theaters, and had a good time. The visuals were great, the story simple but effective, and the action was cool. What more did people want? It has some small flaws sure, but it was excitin, and the use of yarn/ webbing/ cloth in the buildings/ crafts/ etc. gave this a future a very different feel.

I wasn't THAT BAD, I think the biggest reason everyone bashed it was because of Shyamalan. It would've been interesting to see if everyone would've hated it as much not knowing he was a part of it.
