WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
An American tourist (Eli Roth) partying in Chile with his two buddies, finds himself trapped in a coastal town hit by a terrible earthquake.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
AFTERSHOCK received some wildly negative reviews when it played Midnight Madness last year at TIFF. I gave it a 6/10, and my review ended up being one of the more positive ones. A collaboration between Eli Roth (whos back at TIFF this year with THE GREEN INFERNO) and Chilean director Nicolas Lopez, AFTERSHOCK is a deliberately grimy, sleazy exploitation thriller, and certainly wont be for all tastes.

I actually really enjoyed the first hour of AFTERSHOCK. Director Lopez takes his time setting the plot in motion, with the first half-hour establishing Eli Roths divorced American tourist, in Chile for some Wolfpack-type partying with two Chilean buddies he meets on his travels. He even drunkenly hits on Selena Gomez (a fun cameo) in one particularly crazy club, before being talked by his buddies into going to a new, exclusive club in a coastal town. Big mistake.

Once the earthquake hits, I was having a ball. Ive always been a sucker for disaster movies, and watching clubbers getting crushed and killed by falling debris are the kind of goofy exploitation-style thrills I like. But- in the last thirty minutes-once the survivors run afoul of some escaped inmates, the movie became a little too HOSTEL-like for my tastes, with long agonizing rape scenes, and prolonged death sequences. I despise torture porn as a genre, and this section of the film qualifies as just that. Roths character, who was set up as the star, also takes a backseat, with Andrea Osvart emerging as the heroine, as she tries to protect her wild younger sister (Lorenza Izzo) from the inmates. Its all in pretty bad taste actually, but then again, its exploitation, so should we expect anything less?

THE EXTRAS
The AFTERSHOCK Blu-ray comes with an international commentary track featuring Roth and Lopez, along with a ten-minute making of and another quick, two minute featurette called Shaking Up the Casting Process which is fun.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
For the first two-thirds of AFTERSHOCK I was having a blast, but it totally lost me once it goes into the gutter in the last thirty minutes. I just really despise torture porn as a genre, but then again, I can deny that AFTERSHOCK is slick, and well-made. If you dont have an aversion to really grimy, grim (in the last thirty minutes anyway) horror, then check it out.
