WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
One of the funniest spoof comedies ever made gets a double helping on DVD. What “plotline” there is follows the ex-fighter pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who suffers from wartime grief. The love of his life, Elaine Dickinson (Julie Hagerty), has just broken up with him and is on a flight for Chicago. To win her back, Striker buys a one way ticket to ride! A barrel of laughs takes flight in this masterpiece of comedy. Look out, it’s AIRPLANE!
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
There are few people that haven’t seen or at least heard of AIRPLANE! Touted by the AFI as one of the funniest films ever made, you’d be a sucker not to treat yourself to this tour de force. AIRPLANE! has everything a grown man needs: slapstick comedy, subtle comedy, site gags, goofs, plot holes, beatings, stabbings, naked boobies, sex jokes, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The laugh-per-minute count is staggering as you’ll almost never stop laughing. Sure, there are some misfired jokes or plain stupid deadpans but they are few and far between. The disco stabbing scene had me rolling for a good five minutes.

The legendary comedy team - Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker put on a goofy display supported by a damn good cast. Peter Graves, Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen, and (the shiz) Robert Stack all vie to put a smile on your face – and they succeed! How can you not laugh at lines like, “We have to find someone who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner." You’ll also find yourself laughing at a lot of moments that are just wrong - most involving brutal deaths. There’s also a lot 9/11 connotations that are hilarious (yes, I just said that) and would never be approached nowadays. AIRPLANE! is a true success and BELONGS in your collection.
THE EXTRAS
Compared to the Bare-Bones original DVD release of AIRPLANE!, this double dip is better. At the same time, I would have liked a little more for the one of the funniest films ever made. To start things off, the DVD’s menu is downright funny and very reminiscent to something from FIGHT CLUB.

Commentary by Producer Jon Davison and Writers/Directors Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker: This is a real treat to hear from these kings of comedy. With films like NAKED GUN and SCARY MOVIE under their belt, you can expect some cool incites to the process and of course, more gags. While not as funny as the film itself, these guys reveal a lot of things you may have missed or didn’t know. Fans will definitely embrace this commentary.

Long Haul Version: Includes Deleted Scenes, Interviews, and More!: This is both good and bad. When you select this feature, icons will appear during the movie that will take you to these additional features. These are great with plenty to keep fans happy. I most appreciated post-interviews with cast members. The bad is that you can’t watch these features together or selected them from the menu.

Trivia Track: Like a lot of other trivia tracks, there’s a lot of great information that geeks such as myself retain. I recommend combining this feature with the audio commentary.

Theatrical Trailer: Old, cheesy, and funny!
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
AIRPLANE! “DON’T CALL ME SHIRLEY!” EDITION is a must have comedy. This is one that you’ll probably watch multiple times over. Longtime fans will find some fun special features and good audio commentary to boot! With the added features, you’ll find something new every time you watch it. It’s cheap, it’s good, it’s Gold! Oh, and as a bonus you can get your own “Otto” the inflatable auto pilot!
