WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Adam Sheldon (Wilson) is a novelist with a serious case of writers block. Hes also knee deep in debt to some Cuban baddies. If he finishes his novel, hell have the cash to pay them off, if not - they kill him. His deadline is thirty days. In steps cutie stenographer Emma Dinsmore (Hudson) to help save our boys life...and possibly his love life as well
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Luke Wilson owns. Years ago, I started off thinking he was a pretty bland actor but in time hes come to impress me greatly. Hes even reached the higher echelons of respect and admiration I have for his brother Owen. Just watch THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, OLD SCHOOL & MY DOG SKIP and youll probably get the same feeling I get with this guy. Hes just impossible to dislike. Ditto for Kate Hudson. Shes cute, funny & charming...and this is from a guy who also didnt think much of her at one point (wait a minute, maybe the problem is me, not them!) All this to say that despite a script thats lacking in many original thoughts and funny ideas, the charismatic performances of these two endearing actors somehow gets you through it without too much damage done. Okay, now the problems

First off, its embarrassing for Reiner to have to recycle a very famous character trait (reading the ending to a book first) from his legendary romantic comedy WHEN HARRY MET SALLY Did he think we wouldnt notice? Its only of the most popular films of that genre in over twenty years. What were you thinking, Rob? Bad move. Dont remind the audience of greater romantic comedies while trying to get yours going...its a sign of weakness. It may seem like a small thing, but it took me way out of it and left a bad taste in my mouth. The film itself is average at best and uninspired at worst. The basic idea of the duo trudging through a literary love affair while their own builds is an interesting one, but the balance between both worlds wasnt executed well enough for me to get romantically captured by this movie. Only the actors likeability and three or four laugh-out-loud moments saved me from being bored. The soundtrack was also a truly unmemorable one. The gorgeous French beauty Sophie Marceau added a bit of zip, but when all was said and done, there were many more misses than hits in ALEX & EMMA.
THE EXTRAS
Youll have the great pleasure of hearing Rob Reiner & Luke Wilson on this film's commentary track. These two cats are fairly upbeat and that, in itself, made listening to this pretty fun. Still, there are some scattered silences that often hurt the flow of the audio track. A theatrical trailer is also included in the extras.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
I would definitely suggest this as a rental if you like either one of the leads, but dont even think of buying this romantic comedy as it lacks a lot of the humor and romance required of the genre. ALEX & EMMA couldve, shouldve and even wouldve but it didnt. Chalk this up in the nay column for your Rob Reiner film festival.
