Just as there’s no substitute for Sean William Scott’s incarnation of Stiffler, there’s also no way in hell any of these new films will top the original three. I loved the first two, and enjoyed AMERICAN WEDDING, but the train stopped for me after that (refer to paragraph one for the exception to this rule). This time around it’s my job, but I’m not complaining. BOL’s “Jim” character played by Bug Hall (that name even beats the time I actually met a Frank Rizzo) was a solid lead, and his two chums were all right as well (despite the fact that Lube was a total Jonah Hill knockoff). I dug the boys and their plight, which can easily make or break a film like this for me.
The story goes back to the series roots (though arguably each incarnation is fueled by a quest for T&A), but instead of merely reading from “The Bible”, they ruin it and as a result go on a hilarious adventure to rewrite the lost stories. The cameos alone make this one worth a look, good ol George Jefferson and Thomas C. Hall being my personal favorites. The writing here is also solid, despite the few times they go a touch overboard, but then again, this IS an AMERICAN PIE film so that’s to be expected. Speaking of which, there’s a rated and unrated version here, but let’s be honest, nobody would ever watch the rated version of an AMERICAN PIE flick, and why would you? These nude chicks are to die for.
THE BOOK OF LOVE does steal a page from ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY’s playbook with the strip joint out in the middle of nowhere, but I’ll forgive them because it shows the boys cross over into CANADA to get there. One of the things that makes me so proud of my country (yes, I’m Canadian) is how easy it is to get into our strip clubs (I experienced my first lap dance at the tender age of sixteen). Fans of the series will love this installment as it doesn’t seem like such a drummed out sequel, and as for the reserved fans of the original trinity, believe me when I tell you there’s more than a few laughs to be had. I know I’m just as shocked as you are.
Gag Reel: A brief four minutes of nonsense. Re-watch the deleted scenes because there’s nothing worthwhile here.
From the Set: Twenty minutes of outtakes with different dialogue examples for various scenes. These are always good for a few laughs. I LOVED the trivia game.
On the Set of American Pie Presents: The Book of Love: The director gives us a “not so typical” behind the scenes look by throwing an eight minute “best scene” montage at us. I love any excuse to show more boobies.
Just the Tips: The Love Manuel: A six minute peek at some of the “Bible” entries. I don’t remember these stories from the Bible, but I sure did like them.
American Pie Trivia: Kevin Horton (Nathan) goes around the movie set asking different people American Pie based questions. Some of these questions were actually pretty tough.
Previews: We have some trailers, a Blu-ray commercial and some BD-LIVE content if you can hook up to the internet.
Extra Tidbit: I was living in TO when they were filming THE NAKED MILE. A hot couple chicks I worked with auditioned and got naked. I still didn't watch it.
