WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Two young girls whom are best friends come across a mermaid who will grant them one wish if they help her find true love within a week. Me trying to avoid stabbing myself ensues.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
This movie is stupid, shallow, and completely devoid of anything that could enjoyed by audiences whom aren't females aged 7 through 15. So why am I giving the movie a semi-decent rating? Because there is nothing about it that would suggest it's NOT for tween girls. In other words, it delivers exactly what its designated audience would want - mermaids, "hot" surfer dudes, "Disney Channel"-ish messages, and even a shopping montage to boot. I hated every second of it... but it wasn't made for me. And I sincerely doubt it was made for any moviegoers from this website. However, I do know of parents who go to this site, and if any of those parents have young daughters, then this movie might make for perfect viewing material.

If you're the type of parent who prefers to watch movies WITH your kid, you might wanna pass up on this one. Not one second goes by where it actually does something actually clever or original, ironically making it perfect for "Disney Channel" viewers everywhere (and yes, I do realize this movie wasn't made by Disney, but that doesn't stop it from completely feeling like it). The type of stuff you can expect throughout the film are things like: girls giggling constantly, girls screaming non-stop when something even remotely frightening happens, girls ogling over surfer dudes and talking about how "dreamy" they are, and girls doing oh-so-"silly" things while trying to make a certain guy fall in love with them. It's all really cornball-ish and dorky crap. But hey, all little kids are allowed to enjoy their own section of things like this. For guys, it's Power Rangers, action figures, dinosaurs, and Legos. And for girls it's Barbies, unicorns, pink clothing, and mermaids.
THE EXTRAS
There's a large collection of extras, but for somebody like me, these were mostly worthless.

Audio Commentary (from director Elizabeth Allen and producer Susan Cartsonis): This is a surprising track, actually featuring some decent information about filmmaking. The speakers discuss the budget, the locations, the story, and working with the young actresses, among other things. Worth a listen.

Scene-Specific Commentary (from tween stars Sarah Paxton, Emma Roberts, and Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque): There are eight scenes in which these three girls giggle and laugh it up non-stop. It really was not my "thing", so to speak. I barely got through the scenes I listened to them.

"Totally" Deleted Scenes: There are 6 of them, entitled "Feet Are Fun", "The Men's Room", "Fish out of Water", "Claire's Photo Album", "They Found Her!", and "Fishy Cecilia". Try to guess how many I watched...

Awesome Auditions (5:20): Shows some interesting audition footage for all three lead girls, as well as the bitchy villain girl. Nice.

Building the Capri Club (3:30): A quick featurette dealing with the movie's production design.

Mermaid Make-Over (3:20): Deals with the make-up and design process for the mermaid's tail.

It's All About Fashion (4:02): Deals with the movie's hair styles and costume design. Bleh.

Aqua Squeal (0:59): A minute of Sara Paxton squealing. Punch me... hard.

Kickin' It On Set (5:05): An excessive amount of outtakes and film flubs, etc.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
I really wish I could give this movie 1 star and argue that Satan made it to punish viewers like me who ever dared to watch it, but I can't. This movie never once promises to be anything more than it is, and for what it is, it does its job surprisingly well (regardless of how much I groaned through it). If you're a parent and you have a daughter under the age of 15, then this is a movie to think about. To everyone else, just do what you were going to do anyway - not watch it.
