WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The adventures of a young faun, named Bambi. The film follows him from birth, through a childhood tinged with alternating sweetness, and the occasional hard dose of reality- finally culminating in a spectacular fire that makes him a full-blown deer.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
BAMBI could make a stone cry. Really. What else can I say about this classic piece of Americana. Heck, its practically a milestone unto itself. To the post 1942-generation, BAMBI was probably the first film that really taught them about death, with the classic, touching scene of Bambis mother being shot by hunters enough to turn seventy years of people off hunting for sport.

That scene aside, its a pretty wonderful film, and the type of animated classic that, sadly, never really gets made anymore. Im not only referring to the 2D animation, but also to the deceptively simple story. Imagine, a studio gambling to make a film about a faun whos mom is killed by hunters? No way would that make it past studio execs today, but good ol Walt Disney was determined not to spoon feed candy-coated crap.

The story is actually pretty universal, with it being a classic coming of age tale that might have been a metaphor for the wartime generation. Bambis idyllic youth is shattered by violence, and eventually, he needs to literally become his father (The Great Prince of The Forest) and fight to protect whats his- just like a whole generation of men who had to ship out in WW2 just like their fathers before them in The First World War.

Alas, maybe Im going a tad overboard. BAMBIs just a great family film no matter how you slice it.

Tricks of the Trade is an archival look as the techniques used to bring this to life. Next, a Silly Symphonies short, The Old Mill . Next up is the trailer .
