WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The adventures of a young faun, named Bambi. The film follows him from birth, through a childhood tinged with alternating sweetness, and the occasional hard dose of reality- finally culminating in a spectacular fire that makes him a full-blown deer.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
BAMBI could make a stone cry. Really. What else can I say about this classic piece of Americana. Heck, itís practically a milestone unto itself. To the post 1942-generation, BAMBI was probably the first film that really taught them about death, with the classic, touching scene of Bambiís mother being shot by hunters enough to turn seventy years of people off hunting for sport.

That scene aside, itís a pretty wonderful film, and the type of animated classic that, sadly, never really gets made anymore. Iím not only referring to the 2D animation, but also to the deceptively simple story. Imagine, a studio gambling to make a film about a faun whoís mom is killed by hunters? No way would that make it past studio execs today, but good olí Walt Disney was determined not to spoon feed candy-coated crap.

The story is actually pretty universal, with it being a classic coming of age tale that might have been a metaphor for the wartime generation. Bambiís idyllic youth is shattered by violence, and eventually, he needs to literally become his father (The Great Prince of The Forest) and fight to protect whatís his- just like a whole generation of men who had to ship out in WW2 just like their fathers before them in The First World War.

Alas, maybe Iím going a tad overboard. BAMBIís just a great family film no matter how you slice it.
THE EXTRAS
This is a loaded Blu-Ray as befits its classic stature. Firstly, we get the lengthy The Making Of Bambi: A Prince Is Born , which I an intriguing look at the creative battles Walt Disney had to struggle with to get this made. Next up, Inside The Disney Archives where we get a look at the original artwork. We also get eight minutes of deleted scenes in full-on HD. Tricks of the Trade is an archival look as the techniques used to bring this to life. Next, a Silly Symphonies short, The Old Mill . Next up is the trailer . Moving on, we get the exclusive HD bonus features. First up, the exhaustive Bambi: Inside Walt's Story Meetings a PiP track, covering the production in extensive detail. Thatís not all! Next is an , a deleted musical number , Bambiís Big Book Of Knowledge and Disneyís Second Screen which allows iPad and laptop users to synch their devices to the film and unlock exclusive content.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
BAMBI on blu-ray is simply a no brainer for anyone, whether theyíre animation buffs, parents, or people that just appreciate a good movie. Highly recommended, even if you own the previous DVD.
