WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A lowly clerk navigates his way through the elite of 19th century Paris by sleeping with the wives and daughters of the cityís most powerful men.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Considering how much you get to see of TWILIGHT heartthrob Robert Pattinson in BEL AMI, Iím shocked this wasnít one of the highest grossing pictures of the year. Then again itís a mediocre movie at best, so I guess itís not that surprising.

The movie is essentially a period drama about Robert Pattinson screwing his way through France. Thereís no real shocks or unexpected twists, so you can probably tell by the logline whether or not this is a movie youíd be interested in. Based on Guy de Maupassantís 1885 novel, BEL AMI is a smutty tale of high-class power marauding as a soap opera. Itís not a love story in any way, though. The main character is purely a social climber. He doesnít sleep with or marry women for romance; he does it for money, status and even spite.

Perhaps thatís the reason the Pattinson is just an unlikable prick in this movie. His Georges Duroy is nearly a sociopath in how he treats people. Heís creepy, conniving and smug and things get more and more ridiculous as the film progresses. Itís almost fun to see how much more of a dick this guy can be to everyone, but Pattinsonís acting (and constantly constipated face) is too uneven to keep you rooting for him. Even with solid sultry turns from Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Kristin Scott Thomas as his main lady loves, this is not a fun or exciting movie to watch. Instead of scandalous, it just comes off as flat and forgettable.
THE EXTRAS
Behind the Scenes (6:36): The cast and crew sum up the characters and plot in case you fell asleep.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Fans and fawners of Robert Pattinson might enjoy an entire movie of Edward sleeping around, but as a film, BEL AMI is a bore. Still better than TWILIGHT, I guess.

Extra Tidbit: Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard both turned down roles in this movie.
