WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
An ex-con reunites with his estranged daughter in order to protect her from criminals who want her dead.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Mel Gibson has been lying low as of late, only recently popping up to act in films like Get the Gringo, Machete Kills and The Expendables 3. If you've seen any of the aforementioned, you know that Gibson was pretty much the best part of all those movies. That streak continues here in Blood Father.

Directed by Jean-Francois Richet (Mesrine, Assault on Precinct 13), Blood Father follows an ex-con who's doing his best to stay sober when his so-called "missing" daughter shows up with a bunch of drug-dealers and criminals on her tale. Yes, she's mixed it up with the wrong crowd and now daddy is dead-set on setting things straight. That includes taking out the trash, if need be. This is a film that's carried by its actors. When the likes of Mel Gibson or Michael Parks is on-screen, it shines. When anyone else is, it falters.

The crux of the story rests on Gibson and his daughter, played by Erin Moriarty. Erin is not bad by any means, but she also pales in comparison to Gibson. That, coupled with the lack of any real chemistry between her and Gibson, really fails to sell the emotional beats of the story. That leaves us with the action, of which is more of the shaky cam variety. The director states in the supplementary features that he doesn't consider himself an action director and it shows. The action is simply a means to an end for him.

Regardless of how you feel about the man personally (because I'm sure a ton of us actually know him), Mel Gibson is a hell of a charismatic actor. Believe me when I tell you that this is his best role in well over a decade, and Gibson really seems to be having fun with the character. For you Lethal Weapon fans, there are definitely shades of Riggs to be found, and they are glorious.

Sadly, one great role is not enough to save what amounts to a paint-by-numbers road trip thriller. The movie is enjoyable, but to a point. The movie's only an hour and a half, but even then it stalls from time to time. I can't speak for the novel on which it is based, but the story goes for all of the obvious tropes you'd expect. Thankfully, the filmmakers know to keep the proceedings lite. In the end, Blood Father is a decent watch but only because of Mel Gibson.
THE EXTRAS
Lost Souls: On the Road with Blood Father (27:50): There's only one supplementary feature on this Blu-ray disc, but it's actually a pretty great one. This movie is far from your big-budget fare, so there's no attempt to try and fluff up the film in this documentary. Interviews with the cast and crew are straightforward and honest regarding the process of making this film. Everyone here is very self-aware of the movie they're making and the talent involved, and it's actually refreshing to see filmmakers just talk about their work and how they do it, rather than kiss everyone's ass and make things out to be peachy keen all the time. On top of that, it really covers everything you wanted to know about making this movie. You can't ask for more than that!
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Blood Father is a serviceable film that's elevated by the performance of its leading man, Mel Gibson. It's enjoyable, largely because of him, so it's an easy recommendation if you're a fan of the man. At the very least, it's worth a rental to get some vintage Gibson acting back into your bloodstream.

I love Mel, dude knows how to bring it. Everything good about this movie revolved around him.
