IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I know this film is hugely popular with people of all ages, but as I was watching it, I couldnít help but feel like Iíve seen it before. I can only assume that the people that were hailing this as comedy gold and one of the funniest movies of all time never watched Da Ali G show. If they had, then they would have realized that this was really a 90-minute version of a 5-minute skit.

Thatís not to say that it wasnít funny, it just felt like Iíd been there before. Almost everything in the beginning (the humor coach, the dinner party, the interviews in Washington, etc.) had been done in some way on his show. They had their funny moments, but without the shock factor, it was just another skit. I was also looking forward to the rodeo scene and I felt that didnít live up to the potential. He had a chance to bring the house down and it felt like he pulled back. Maybe he was scared for his life. Also, the naked fight scene lost its humor pretty quickly, but the length of the scene was one of the things that made it funny.

I did love the running gag that he was scared of Jews. Iím sure some members of the Jewish community will find it offensive, but it worked and made for some good laughs. Perhaps the best part of the film was when he was picked up by the students from the University of South Carolina. Nothing against SC, but I used to live there and I can say that those four students were somewhat accurate representatives of the state and the University. What makes it better is the fact that they sued to try and get their images removed from the film. Luckily for us, they lost.

If youíve never seen Da Ali G show, then I think youíll get a lot more out of this movie than those that were fans of the show. I think the shock factor is important in a movie like this and it didnít register very high for me. However, even if you liked the show, there will be something in this movie that will make you laugh.
THE EXTRAS
Deleted Scenes (24:00): All of these were almost indistinguishable from the final cut of the film. They could have been added in and I wouldnít have known the difference. They were funny, although Iím glad they didnít include the Sexy Drown Watch ending.

Global PR Tour (16:39): This is the best part of the DVD. It was absolutely hilarious. Itís a collection of several appearances Sacha Baron Cohen made while promoting the film. The best was his turn on the Tonight Show where he made a bed with Martha Stewart.

There are also some Previews and a Music Infomercial.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
I feel like Iíve been a little hard on the film and I donít mean to be. It was a funny film that gets better in retrospect. I also highly recommend watching it with a group of people because I think that will add to the enjoyment factor. Itís not the best, or funniest film of 2006, but its worthy in any DVD collection.
