I have nothing personally against Heather Graham. Although a little ditzy, she seems to be a good person and I’m sure she’s nice as can be. Unfortunately, she can’t act…at all. Many people (including me) were blown away by her performance in BOOGIE NIGHTS because she did such a great job with her character. Later on, we discovered that it wasn’t a stretch for her to play a dumb, confused blonde. Those traits work well when you’re playing a strung out porn star, but not so much when you’re playing an intense, recovering drug addict.
Unfortunately for the film, it needed a powerful lead to pull off many of the dramatic scenes. It wasn’t that the script was horrible or the directing was bad, the audience just couldn’t accept Graham in the lead role. Just when we’re about to witness a powerful scene, she would miss her cue by a few seconds, or her eyes would glass over and she’d lose us. There’s a scene at the end of the film where she’s fighting with her boyfriend and you can see what I’m talking about there.
I didn’t want make this all about Heather Graham, but this is her movie and it’s success is directly correlated with her performance. Everyone else does an average job and the story is fine although a bit overdone. However, despite the efforts of everyone else, it all comes back to Ms. Graham and that’s unfortunate for everyone involved.
