WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Bugsy Siegel is a notorious New York gangster that leaves the big apple behind to chase a dream in Los Angeles. He gets caught up in a fantasy to build a gambling empire in Las Vegas, and that dream will eventually cost him his life.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Barry Levinson and Warren Beatty make very linear films that rely heavily on dialogue and performances. In my opinion, neither of them are a sure bet to make a hit and together they make for a long and often boring film. BUGSY has good intentions of being a gritty gangster film, but it falls short and ends up being a drawn out drama.

One problem with BUGSY is the lack of style involved in the telling. I donít need a music video to keep me interested, but this film had very little style to it. Bugsy Siegel was already an infamous American before this film, so they had a lot to work with, but Warren Beatty failed to give him the edge or charm youíd expect a New Yorker in LA to have.

The rest of the cast does an amicable job with their roles. If youíre familiar with the story, then there wonít be much suspense for you and Levinson doesnít do a great job of building it for the audience. Another one of the problems with this film is that itís a story thatís been told before and this telling didnít offer anything new to the mix. I had trouble rooting for Bugsy because I didnít really care about him.
THE EXTRAS
The Road to Damascus: The Reinvention of Bugsy Siegel (90:30): Warren Beatty, Barry Levinson and James Toback sit down and talk about the film for an hour and a half. They splice in interviews with other cast members, but itís really focused on those three talking. This could have easily been a commentary, but itís still nice to hear them talk about the film. They have a lot to say about the film and for the most part, itís a pretty interesting discussion.

Deleted Scenes (1:24): These are two short scenes that donít add anything to the film, but itís still neat to see them included.

Bugsy Siegelís Screen Test (3:06): This is a deleted scene featuring Warren Beatty as Bugsy auditioning for a role. Itís decent, but nothing great.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If you really love mob flicks, then BUGSY will probably suit your fancy. However, itís a little too long and a little too boring to keep your interest throughout and chances are good youíve seen a similar story already.
