WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
When Nevís relationship with a family he corresponds with online becomes more involved, his brother Ariel and friend Henry, two aspiring filmmakers, start documenting the curious events that continue to unfold unaware of just how far this seemingly innocent adventure would take them.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
A few months ago I had the chance to review a documentary type film very similar to this one called TALHOTBLOND, a film Iíd never heard of but completely blew me away. The sad thing about CATFISH is that itís essentially the same story except CATFISH is much tamer. The premise is the same as both films explore the lies and false intrigue that people create online but the end result here is much easier to swallow and nowhere near as extreme as it could have been. I liked CATFISH yes, but it pales in comparison to TALHOTBLOND when it comes to driving the idea home.

The worst thing about films like this one is that theyíre like FIGHTCLUB; you canít really talk about them much without giving anything away. Suffice to say, thereís nothing left to the imagination that the back of the box or the trailer doesnít imply. We know Nev is heading for disaster here and I couldnít help but cringe every time he talked to Angela on the phone or when he started piecing things together and/or questioning what was going on. People are lonely these days and we live in a day and age where the internet has become a social hub where anyone, anywhere can get showered in attention they wouldnít normally get anywhere else. I canít say that Iíve never stretched the truth a bit, but nothing as diabolically complex as this.

My biggest question about this sort of situation simply put is this; ďAre you f*cking serious brah, are you seriously going to be duped like this?Ē I mean címon people, we live in a day and age where internet love stories are the butt end of jokes like, ďdude, ten bucks says youíre not even talking to a chick.Ē That said, in Nevís defence this did all seem legit at first and our first basic reaction is to believe people and take things at face value so I guess I canít blame him but Iíve only heard of a couple relationships that started online and had a happy ending so itís my humble opinion that the internet is not the place to go looking for love.

CATFISH is a great eye opener, especially if this is the first film of this sort youíve watched (had I not watched TALHOTBLOND Iíd have felt punched in the gut way harder). The dude I felt for the most was Angelaís husband who had a marvellously sober speech about Catfish at the end of the film, which clarified the naming of the film as up until that moment I had no idea what the correlation was. Everyone that dabbles on the internet should watch both CATFISH and TALHOTBLOND simply because these are examples of what can happen when a seemingly innocent lie takes hold, sprouts roots and then grows exponentially.
THE EXTRAS
Secrets Revealed: Here we have a Q&A interview sitting with Nev, Ariel and Henry where they answer questions pertaining to the film and the experience in general. Listening to the slew of titles they went through is hilarious but Iím very glad they landed on Catfish (which wasnít even their idea) especially considering how it ties into the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Both films Iíve mentioned are well worth your time and are quite frankly as close to ďmust seeĒ filmmaking as you can get these days. Thereís not a hell of a lot of replay value here so buying them isnít a must but they make for a phenomenal one sitting that you wonít soon forget.

THis movie sucked...

Everybody makes it out to be something so much more. And it's not. Everybody claims how amazing the ending it. And it is the dumbest thing ever. yeah it freaks you out and makes you think who you really talk to online. But overall it was freakin stupid.

It was about Paradise Lost. How one, very lonely, person tried to regain something that she lost due to having to give up the things she cared for the most to help others. It was quite sad and tragic. In order to feel happy this person had to put on a huge lie and she didn't mean to do it on purpose, she just missed who she once was.
