WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
On the eve of their 20th reunion, a high school loser-turned-CIA superspy recruits an old classmate to help clear his name and save the world.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

You know exactly what kind of movie you’re getting with CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE. It's completely predictable as both an action-spy movie and a buddy comedy, but one thing made this movie better than expected—and he used to go by The Rock.

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart can both be charismatic, entertaining performers and CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE makes good use of their talents. It's a smart move having them both play against type—making Hart the straight man and Johnson the comic relief. For the most part, Hart still gets to do his usual shrill shtick, but The Rock truly makes the most out of the material as Robbie Wheirdicht. The character is a bizarre mix of unstoppable superspy and insecure weirdo and the action star clearly relishes playing a guy who is super in to unicorns, wears a fanny pack, is obsessed with Molly Ringwald and occasionally punches people. If you ever needed proof that Dwayne Johnson has comedy chops as big as his muscles, CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE is it.

The movie also boasts a surprising supporting cast, comprised of Amy Ryan, Jason Bateman, Aaron Paul, and a couple other surprises. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber (DODGEBALL, WE’RE THE MILLERS) has good comic instincts, knowing when to let the actors do the work and when to rely on visual gags (mainly the enormous size disparity between the two leads). He can't help it from occasionally falling in to clichés (anything to do with Hart's unhappy wife) and dragging in the middle like most films of this nature, but luckily he has The Rock behind him to do most of the literal heavy lifting.

THE EXTRAS

The Blu Ray comes with both the Theatrical Version and an Unrated Cut, which adds nine minutes of new and extended scenes. There's a little more vulgarities, but as with most comedies, you're safer going with the shorter version.

Commentary by director Rawson Marshall Thurber and editor Michael Sale: Both men acknowledge that there won't be a lot of people listening to this commentary (as opposed to one with Johnson and Hart). They both keep the conversation going throughout with random stories from production, but there's honestly nothing revealing enough here that's worth your time.

Alternate Scenes: You can access deleted and extended scenes for both the theatrical and unrated versions separately. The unrated stuff is again a little dirtier (and there's a lot of it), but most of it was wisely excised and unmemorable.

Gag Reel (6:18): There are already some outtakes in the end credits itself, but you get quite a lot more here. Most of these are actually pretty funny and showcase what a fun shoot this must have been.

Line-O-Rama (2:30): A collection of alternate improv takes for a handful of scenes. It's short enough that you won't feel like you wasted your time watching it.

Dance Off (2:26): Watch the actor who played the younger Dwayne Johnson (pre-CGI face implantation) having a dancing contest with Johnson himself.

Couch Time Lapse (0:41): An extremely short glimpse at how the production staff pulled off the single-take couch gag early on in the film.

A DVD and Digital Copy are both included.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE is a completely cookie cutter studio action-comedy, but still better than expected thanks to Dwayne Johnson, who is very funny playing against-type. Rent it or catch it on TV just to enjoy his performance.

Extra Tidbit: Dwayne Johnson is over a foot taller and a hundred pounds heavier than Kevin Hart.

Yet again, disapointing extras !

The movie was fun, but the lack of real making-on or BtS is becoming increasingly the norm nowadays ! In a few month, it will become like the DVD when the BR arrived: Less and less extras on BR, then more and more on 4K, so people who love movies and their BtS stories are forced to buy 4K players and discs !
