Chris Rock: Never Scared
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Chris Rock, the three-time Emmy Award-winning stand-up comedian, actor and host of HBO’s acclaimed "The Chris Rock Show" stars in his fourth stand-up solo special for HBO entitled “Never Scared”. Filmed at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Having just viewed Eddie Murphy’s RAW, this comedy concert was tame in comparison. That said, if you compare it to Bill Cosby’s BILL COSBY: HIMSELF, it would most certainly be considered raunchy, take your pick. If you like expletive-filled routines that poke fun at everything under the sun, then this just might be your thing. In my opinion, Chris Rock rocks, and always will. My favorite Rock comedy special is BIGGER AND BLACKER, but this one comes a close second. It is not as hilarious as the former film, but it is still very funny. Chris Rock takes a shot at many controversial and modern day issues such as war, men and women, Michael Jackson, racial humor, the Church of the ATM, marriage, affirmative action, the rich and wealthy and more. He makes valid points while making you laugh at the same time (it's funny because it's true!). He even defends his favorite type of music, rap. This is the best part of the DVD, because he really lets loose as to why the government hates rap, and rappers.
He talks about some special people to me, such as Tupac, Biggie and Jam Master Jay, their murders and the fact that no one knows who committed these crimes. Really? But they can find Saddam Hussein in a spider hole in another continent! He makes you think. Vanilla Ice is still alive and kicking, but Tupac Shakur is dead, why? The foul language is acceptable because it is just right, not too much and not too scary that you couldn’t let your folks watch it too. In comparison, Murphy’s RAW is a film that your parents should definitely not watch, unless your parents are cooler/hipper than you are. Chris Rock is a real patriot, and he talks at length about the whole "American issue" which is very enlightening especially when he claims the only true Americans are the veterans, as they gave their lives for this country, and the illegal aliens who went through Hell to get to this country. All the rest, he claims, are just lucky to be born on American soil. Mr. Rock is a true American, and he proves it with his meaningful insights and jabs at controversial topics too-- he ain't scared, as the title aptly says.
As a bonus, this DVD also offers us Chris Rock’s first solo half-hour comedy special entitled “Chris Rock: Big Ass Jokes”. It is not as funny as the main event here, but it is worth checking out since it is also likely to get you laughing some more. A nice 30 minute addition to this performance.
As well, exclusive unseen footage (approximately 15 minutes worth) of additional material from this HBO Special.
It’s no surprise to me that Chris Rock was named the #1 comic by Entertainment Weekly for the year 2004. He is amazing, hits the nail right on the head and amuses you throughout it all with his jokes and humorous comments. Like many stand-up comedians, he pokes fun at celebrities, at politics, and other subjects that arouse our interest in this society. A fantastic way to spend 90 minutes to unwind and laugh your head off. Check it out if you like comedy, especially Chris Rock comedy.
