Out of all the fading action stars whoíve made their way to the home video market, Dolph Lundgren is by far the most dependable. No matter the budget or resources, the man does not fake it, and he always brings his best no matter what the movie is and no matter what role heís playing, whether itís actor, writer or even director. (Heís a man of many talents, one of which just happens to be the ability to destroy people.) COMMAND PERFORMANCE is another jack-of-all-trades outing for the man, one where he has his hand in pretty much every pot behind and in front of the cameras and the results are clear. Itís easily one of his best recent offerings.
The most obvious thing about COMMAND PERFORMANCE, from the first scene on, is that it doesnít pull any punches. This is a pretty brutal flick. A lot of these straight to DVD actioners usually donít bring much whoopass until the final climax, but not this one. Itís got tons of great action sequences throughout and a high body count (including a surprising amount of collateral damage). .Dolph kicks ass as gangbanger turned drummer Joe. He refuses to use a gun for the majority of the movie, which means showcasing what Dolph does best Ė dispensing straight beatdowns with his bare hands, as well as the occasional drumstick through the esophagus or guitar neck impalement. Thereís even a classic Dolph line here and there (ďDying is easy; rock and roll is hard.Ē)
Dolph has the acting and action chops, but heís also a pretty competent director (although the shaky cam got to be kind of annoying). The script which he also co-wrote was decent for this kind of flick, though I didnít care much about a lot of the time-wasting subplots like the bad guy with the change of heart or the reporter trying to make it out alive. However, that kind of stuff is easy to overlook given the amount of asskicking to be had.
Extra Tidbit: In addition to being a physical badass, Dolph Lundgren speaks five languages, has a Masterís degree in Chemical Engineering, was accepted to MIT on a Fulbright Scholarship, and reportedly has an IQ of 160. Truly a great man.
