WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Cartoonist Jack Deebs (Byrne) gets sucked into the Cool World, an imaginary world he’s created in his comic books. Once there, he meets sexpot Holli Would, a Marilyn Monroe-esque bimbo whose main objective is to get into the real human world. The only way she can do that is the sleep with a “noid” (actual human). A young Brad Pitt plays the cop on their tracks.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
As a young lad back in 1992, I recall going to see this movie at the cinema. I also remember my secret reason being the ultra sexy trailers on TV showing babe Kim Basinger prancing around in some naughty clothing. Well, mission accomplished. I had enough “material” to last me through the winter months. Fast forward ten years and I’ve become a huge fan of director Ralph Bakshi’s work; particularly FRITZ THE CAT and one of my all-time favorites AMERICAN POP. Needless to say, I was looking forward to yet another go-around with COOL WORLD. Mission not accomplished! This movie isn’t any good and it probably wasn’t way back then either. The truth is...I was just a horny teenager.

I’m now a horny adult. COOL WORLD mixes cartoons with actual human actors a la WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? The difference being that this film has rough language, many sexual situations & dialogue and a lame-ass story. If it wasn’t for the latter, it might have been somewhat enjoyable. What’s more, the interaction between the cartoons and the actors looks awfully fake and truth be told Gabes Byrne and Brad Pitt don’t look too sharp when delivering some of the uninspired dialogue from the script. If that wasn’t enough, the character of Holli Would comes off looking more like Olive Oyl compared to the standard of cartoon sexiness set by Jessica Rabbit in the aforementioned “Rabbit”. Holli looks a bit sexier once she transforms in human form, but by that point, I wasn’t interested anymore. Neither were my pants.

To top it all off, the soundtrack is almost non-existent with a couple of forgettable rock tunes sprinkled around. I did however get a kick out of the complete and utter madness that was taking place in the Cool World sequences. I’m a huge fan of Bakshi’s animation style and there were some really wacky and occasionally disturbing doodles that were floating around in this place. I also bought into the relationship between human Brad Pitt and his love interest, a gorgeous and super sexy female cartoon. The last ten minutes are a particular gas, but unfortunately they’re the only ten minutes that were. Ah, if only I were young again…
THE EXTRAS
They're aren't any.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
You want a good time? Then go rent Bakshi’s FRITZ THE CAT, HEAVY TRAFFIC, LORD OF THE RINGS and especially AMERICAN POP. Those are films well worthy of your time and money. COOL WORLD doesn’t supply nearly enough "oomph" to merit even a rental on a boring Saturday night.
