WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Three couples (Vince Vaughn & Malin Ackerman, Jon Favreau & Kristin Davis, Faizon Love & Kali Hawk), are manipulated by another couple (Jason Bateman & Kristen Bell), into joining them for a romantic getaway to Eden Island- a resort designed to counsel troubled couples.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
COUPLES RETREAT is a shockingly bad romantic comedy. I say shockingly, due to the level of talent involved. This film not only features former SWINGERS Vince Vaughn, and Jon Favreau, but itís even written by them- with their last collaboration being the excellent MADE.

Sadly, both seemed to have gone totally Hollywood with the rom-com piece of crap, which probably doesnít feature a single genuine laugh. I think Favreau can be forgiven for this, as his work on the IRON MAN films' more than makes up for the occasional misfire. However, as far as Vaughn is concerned, this falls squarely in line with the other crappy rom-coms heís been doing since THE BREAK UP. This is just as bad as FOUR CHRISTMASES, and FRED CLAUS, and itís a real shame Vaughn seems so gung-ho on making these crappy (yet profitable) films. The foul-mouthed rebel from WEDDING CRASHERS is nowhere to be seen here.

Supporting Vaughn, and Favreau is a truly excellent supporting cast, including Kristen Bell, Jason Bateman, and Jean Reno- but none of them get anything worthwhile to do here. The only one who managed to wring any laughs out the film was Peter Serafinowicz (of SPACED, and formerly the voice of Darth Maul), as a GUITAR HERO obsessed resort worker (allowing for ample product placement).

THE EXTRAS
Considering that this was a huge hit when it came out in the fall, Universal has predictably pulled out all the stops with the blu-ray. First up, we get commentary with Vince Vaughn, and director Peter Billingsley , who- in another life, viewers may remember as Ralphie in A CHRISTMAS STORY. As a bonus, the commentary is also available through U-Control , which basically means this is a PiP track. I should mention that this track wreaked havoc with my Samsung player, and it took a lot of tinkering to finally get rid it, so I could watch the film uninterrupted.

Next up is a lame alternate ending , which neatly wraps up all the storylines in a beyond lame conclusion, which was wisely left on the cutting room floor. Thereís also a boatload of deleted & extended scenes , along with Therapyís Greatest Hits , which is a montage of outtakes from the therapy scenes, featuring more from John Michael Higgins, and Ken Jeong.

Rapping things up are a gag reel , which is funnier than the film, and two featurettes; Behind the Yoga , and Paradise Found: Filming on Bora-Bora .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Considering how badly COUPLES RETREAT was received this fall (despite the financial success, Iíve never run into anyone who actually liked it), I expected the film to be pretty lousy, but it was even worse than I thought it would be. This truly is a totally disposable rom-com, and a sad reminder of what a hack Vaughn is turning into. Hopefully, heíll start doing some quality work again soon, like his tiny role in Sean Pennís INTO THE WILD. I have no doubt heís a talented guy, and as a former fan, I hope heíll do something worthwhile again.
