WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A wealthy young woman (Mia Wasikowska) living in late 19th-century America with her widowed father is swept off-her-feet by a romantic but impoverished English aristocrat (Tom Hiddleston). Soon the two are married, and the young woman finds herself living with her enigmatic new husband and his cold-hearted sister (Jessica Chastain) in a sweeping but remote and rundown English estate. Alas, the three of them are not quite as alone as they think...
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
CRIMSON PEAK is another one of those much-maligned movies that failed to find an audience theatrically but could generate a cult following over time. An unabashed throwback to forties-style horror chillers, where spookiness (by necessity) stood-in for gore, CRIMSON PEAK upset fans who were clearly expecting something a lot less sophisticated.

As such, Blu-ray is the perfect way to gain a new appreciation for director Guillermo Del Toro’s film. Gorgeous to look at (Dan Laustsen’s cinematography really pops in HD), minus “fanticipation” CRIMSON PEAK’s more romantic, gothic influences become easier to appreciate, along with the superb acting by stars Mia Wasikowska and Tom Hiddleston. His Bryonic hero is so appealing that unlike many other films of this genre, you understand why Wasikowska’s smart heroine would leave to follow-him halfway across the globe – their chemistry is really there. Ditto Jessica Chastain, who seems to be having a ball as the movie's walking and talking red-herring.

If CRIMSON PEAK has a failing it’s that the genre aspect is actually the film’s weakest part, with the romance being the strongest and the section of the film Del Toro seems most enthralled by. The inevitable blast of horror and gore feels more like a concession to his audience. His CRIMSON PEAK star Charlie Hunnam also has a rather bland part as a rival suitor, with his appearance in the climax being a bit too neat and tidy.
THE EXTRAS
As usual for a Del Toro film, CRIMSON PEAK comes-out on Blu-ray with a fully loaded disc along with the usual bonus digital/DVD copy.

Deleted scenes: Not too much here – the minor scenes only total about three and a half minutes of superfluous excised material.

Audio Commentary: Del Toro’s commentary tracks are always good and this is no exception, with his genuine affection for the film and his fans coming through.

Beware of Crimson Peak: A guided-tour of the Crimson Peak house soundstage, hosted by none other than Tom Hiddleston.

A Living Thing: More on the Sharpe family home soundstage, including how it was built and more.

I Remember Crimson Peak: A better than average video diary-style making of, cut into four parts and running about half-an-hour total.

The Light & Dark of Crimson Peak: Featurette on the production design, lighting and overall look of the film – one of its strongest assets.

Hand Tailored Gothic: A featurette examining the costume design – too bad this isn’t up for a technical Oscar.

Crimson Phantoms: In-depth on the CGI/Practical ghost fx. A Primer on Gothic Romance Throughout the entire project, from its announcement to release, Del Toro has insisted CRIMSON PEAK is a gothic romance rather than a horror movie, and here he and some of the cast weigh-in on the genre.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
For my money, CRIMSON PEAK was a pretty outstanding little horror sleeper, and a rare A-level example of the genre in defiance of the cash-in, cash-out movies that dominate the horror marketplace these days. If word-of-mouth about how the film wasn’t scary turned you off while this was in theaters, check it out at home. You’ll likely be in for a pleasant, creepy little surprise.
