WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A half-hour HBO comedy series in which British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, plays a trio of hilarious and offbeat characters; the hip-hop flavored, grammatically challenged and idiot journalist, Ali G, being the most popular. The show brings Sacha to the U.S. where he interviews high-ranking politicians and other high-powered gents and proceeds to throw them completely off guard as they begin to realize how incredibly simple-minded, unprofessional and crass this journalist really is (hes acting, of course). Sachas other characters are Borat, a peasant reporter from Kazakhstan and the ultra-cool Austrian fashion correspondent, Bruno.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Without HBO, there really wouldnt be any reason to own a TV set. OZ, SEX AND THE CITY, THE SOPRANOS and SIX FEET UNDER had already made me a converted follower of everything on the network and yet Im genuinely surprised every time I find myself completely blown away, all over again, by another new program of theirs. Granted, Sacha and his character Ali G were already household names in the U.K., but it still says something about HBO, that they had the smarts to finally bring this loveable fool stateside.

This show will have you laughing out loud...its really that good. How could you not holler with laughter when you see Ali G interviewing accomplished and respected men (Boutros-Boutros Ghali, Donald Trump, Buzz Aldrin, Newt Gingrich) and witness him asking them a variety of retarded, sexual and just plain silly questions. A good example has Ali asking former U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali if Disneyland is a part of the United Nations and if not, why not? He even sits down with that king of fools, James Lipton from the Actors Studio. Its no big surprise that Lipton ends up looking like a jackass without a sense of humor. Ali asks these questions with such a child-like innocence that its almost impossible for the interviewee not to take him seriously. Besides these Q&A sessions, he also does a lot of field work and in studio stuff. A couple of personal favorites of mine are when hes taken on a personal tour inside the United Nations conference room (where he utters an array of politically incorrect and asinine things) and an in-studio discussion he has with a rabbi, a priest and an atheist you can just imagine the insane things he asks this group. Borat, the horny and very old-fashioned fish-out-of-water Kazakhstani reporter is another one of Sachas hilarious creations. This show really allows Cohen to demonstrate the great range he has when you see him playing these three totally different personalities. A couple of Borats finer moments (both on disc one) are when he visits an etiquette expert in the South and when he consults a dating agency and then proceeds to go on a speed dating trial. Bruno is the least funny of his creations, mostly there to reveal the superficiality of the fashion world. Luckily, he is underused. Words will not do this show justice, watch one episode and fall in love with this Brit chameleons madcap humor. DA ALI G SHOW is a wildly funny and inventive half-hour that you simply should not miss.
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentary w/ Sacha Baron Cohen and Series Producer/Writer Dan Mazer: There are a few lulls in this and I wish they'd gotten into the history of the show more, but on the whole, I was satisfied with this commentary track (just on one episode). It was fun hearing the real Sacha speak for once and you do learn a lot about the method behind their madness. A couple of very cool dudes

2 Borat Bonus Clips: In the first clip, Borat speaks to a rich snob and compares women in his native land to animals at a Hamptons horse show. In the second, Borat finds himself at an American patriot rally and questions a couple of Americans with his usual nave charm. More can't miss stuff here

The Unedited Spyz Movie that Ali G Pitched in Hollywood:

Ali G (spy extraordinaire) gets attacked by three people in a forest. He kills two of them.

When discovering the third person was female, he has sex with her up against a tree.

Ali G returns home to his wife, who proceeds to nag him. He tells her he has to save the world.

Ali G goes on a rooftop and defuses a time bomb. He fights off more attackers. They make gunshot noises with their mouths.

Ali G has a threesome with three sexy female spies.

Ali G tells his wife he was right.

And it's even funnier than it sounds.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
This is worth your bucks! The DVD Clinic suggests this show make it on your next DVD purchase list. Its a mad twist on shows like CANDID CAMERA and PUNKD, but 10 times funnier and without the revelation at the end. Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedic geniusI dont exaggerate.
