WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A wimpy stepfather finds his place in the household challenged when his stepkids' real father shows up to emasculate him.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

DADDY'S HOME coasts almost entirely on the goodwill of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's last collaboration, the vastly superior THE OTHER GUYS. The chemistry is still there and the duo's verbal sparring is definitely the highlight, but everything else about the movie just limps along.

The film comes from writer-director Sean Anders, whose previous films HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 and THAT'S MY BOY are almost the textbook definition of mediocrity. DADDY'S HOME follows in those footsteps. Everything about it is disappointingly average, from the uninspired writing to the predictable performances. You've seen Ferrell and Wahlberg play versions of these characters countless times before and the script doesn't give them much room to stretch. The two admittedly do have a good rapport in spite of the material, so there are laughs occasionally. It just could've been so much better if everyone had tried a little harder.

The one saving grace of DADDY'S HOME is the supporting cast. Thomas Hayden Church is probably the best part of the movie as Ferrell's overly honest boss. Comedian Hannibal Burress also has a strange, but entertaining bit part as a random houseguest. And there are also very brief but much appreciated appearances from reliable performers like Bobby Cannavale, Bill Burr and a great cameo that I won't spoil. It's not enough to make me recommend rushing out to see the movie, but it is enough to help you get through this otherwise mundane comedy.

THE EXTRAS

The Blu Ray has a good number of special features, but this is a case of quantity over quality.

The Making of DADDY'S HOME (11:55): Get a quick overview of the film's conception, production and the cast and crew involved. Nothing too in-depth, but not a bad behind-the-scenes compilation for this kind of movie.

Daddy-Off (6:45): A worthless featurette that looks at the battling relationship between the two main stars. Skip it.

Daddy Daughter Dance (5:11): A scene-specific Making Of showing filming of the film's final scene as well as some quick interviews about it.

Halftime Stunt (8:55): This looks at the climactic sequence that takes place at a Lakers game and how they filmed at a real life sporting event with hundreds of fans. Also, apparently Kobe Bryant shot a scene but it was cut.

Tony Hawk: Skater Double (4:02): The legendary skater acted as Will Ferrell's skateboarding double and discusses the experience here. A bit too short to be really effective.

Child's Play (5:00): Learn about the child actors, if you care.

Hannibal Buress: The Perfect Houseguest (5:36): This chat with the low-key comedian about his role in the film is one of the special feature highlights, but is all too short.

Blooper (2:05): Not a true gag reel, just a brief scene where the actors can't stop laughing. Hilarity!

Deleted and Extended Scenes (7:39): Five scenes that were rightfully cut, including Car Ride Q&A, Have Fun, Pre-Dance, Motorcycle Brad, and Special Ops.

A DVD and Digital Copy are also included.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

DADDY'S HOME lazily tries to capture the magic that Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg shared in THE OTHER GUYS with minimal success. If you really loved their chemistry together, this might be worth a rental. Otherwise, you're safe waiting until this comes on cable for free.

Extra Tidbit: This movie beat ELF as Will Ferrell's highest-grossing live action movie, so expect more Ferrell-Wahlberg movies in the future.
