If you compare it to his other films, I have to say that Darjeeling is more polished than his previous works. The dialogue is smoother and each scene seems to flow together better than weíve seen before. The rapport between the three brothers is the highlight of the film and I enjoyed everything they had to say to one another. Their feelings for one another and their individual personalities really come through in the dialogue and thatís easily the best part of the film.
The film suffers when the attention is put on one of the brothers individually. Together, they have a relationship and a story, but separately, theyíre characters that donít have a back story or any traits that most of us can relate to. Luckily, the film is focused on the three brothers and their relationship with each other, so the distractions are minimal. My other complaint is that the film was about 20 minutes too long. It wasnít a long movie to begin with, but I felt it was over at the 70 minute mark. I think the short film HOTEL CHAVALIER (which you can add with the DVD) should have been part of the feature and that would have given it a full runtime.
Despite a couple of minor problems, this is a great film that fans of Wes Anderson will definitely enjoy. With the excellent dialogue and great humor, I think this will also appeal to people that havenít liked his previous movies or people that arenít familiar with his work. The dialogue is some of the best in any Anderson film and it has a high re-watchable factor.
