WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
One year after their father died, three brothers take a spiritual trip to see their reclusive mother. Their attempts to reconnect with one another are met with resistance as each one has secrets they wish to keep from the others.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Wes Anderson is one of those few directors that I think cannot make a bad movie. Iíve enjoyed all of his films and his track record is one of the best in Hollywood. Despite that, I still donít think Anderson has made his masterpiece. Heís made a lot of great films, but has yet to make that one special film. THE DARJEELING LIMITED is another good film from a great director but falls just short of greatness.

If you compare it to his other films, I have to say that Darjeeling is more polished than his previous works. The dialogue is smoother and each scene seems to flow together better than weíve seen before. The rapport between the three brothers is the highlight of the film and I enjoyed everything they had to say to one another. Their feelings for one another and their individual personalities really come through in the dialogue and thatís easily the best part of the film.

The film suffers when the attention is put on one of the brothers individually. Together, they have a relationship and a story, but separately, theyíre characters that donít have a back story or any traits that most of us can relate to. Luckily, the film is focused on the three brothers and their relationship with each other, so the distractions are minimal. My other complaint is that the film was about 20 minutes too long. It wasnít a long movie to begin with, but I felt it was over at the 70 minute mark. I think the short film HOTEL CHAVALIER (which you can add with the DVD) should have been part of the feature and that would have given it a full runtime.

Despite a couple of minor problems, this is a great film that fans of Wes Anderson will definitely enjoy. With the excellent dialogue and great humor, I think this will also appeal to people that havenít liked his previous movies or people that arenít familiar with his work. The dialogue is some of the best in any Anderson film and it has a high re-watchable factor.
THE EXTRAS
Featurette (21:21): For the lone special feature, I have to say this is pretty dissappointing. This is a quick featurette focusing on the train and the various villiages in the movie. The train setting is pretty neat and the production designer discusses how the train is like another character in the film.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
To simplify it; if you already like Wes Anderson, youíre going to love DARJEELING LIMITED. If youíre not sure, or havenít seen one of his films yet, then this is a good one to get started on. However, given the near-bare-bones DVD release, Iíd keep this one to a rental.
